Sega and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio have announced Virtua Fighter 5 REVO is coming to Steam, making it the first Virtua Fighter game to be released on PC in nearly 27 years. The release of REVO also marks the first time that Virtua Fighter 5 will be released on the PC after its initial arcade launch back in 2006. This version of Virtua Fighter 5 will have a vast number of improvements compared to its previous releases on consoles.

Sega's Virtua Fighter series started back in 1993 for arcades, with the first title being one of the most influential fighting games of all time. The series pushed the envelope with its 3D graphics and technology, which many found to be ahead of its time. Despite its influence, Virtua Fighter isn't as popular compared to the likes of Capcom's Street Fighter or Bandai Namco's Tekken, with its last mainline release being the aforementioned Virtua Fighter 5. Since Sega has recently been revisiting some of its classic IPs like Golden Axe and Shinobi, many fighting game fans believed that Virtua Fighter deserved a similar revival. Sega has announced the series will be making a big comeback on PC this winter, starting with Virtua Fighter 5 REVO.

Virtua Fighter 5 REVO is an enhanced remaster of the original Virtua Fighter 5, with this port being based on 2021's Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown. The REVO version aims to give fighting game players the most optimal experience on PC, such as rollback netcode for a smooth online experience, 60 FPS, and 4K resolution support. There will also be a number of balance adjustments coming to this version as well. While a release date hasn't been announced yet, Sega confirms that Virtua Fighter 5 REVO will be launching on Steam this Winter.

When will Virtua Fighter 5 REVO be released on Steam?

  • Winter 2024

The last Virtua Fighter game to release on PC was Virtua Fighter 2.1 back in 1997. The original Virtua Fighter 5 was first released in 2006 for arcades, before launching on PlayStation 3 in 2007. An updated version of Virtua Fighter 5 subtitled Final Showdown was released in the 2010s for Xbox and PS3, before the game got a complete remake using Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio's Dragon Engine, released exclusively on PS4. A lot of Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown's changes and features will be retained for REVO, such as character customization and costumes.

When fans heard that Sega announced a new Virtua Fighter earlier in November, many were hoping it could be a brand-new mainline game instead of a port. Some were at the very least happy that Virtua Fighter 5 is finally coming to the PC 18 years after it first launched, giving gamers a chance to try out Sega's classic fighting game if they haven't already.
