Konami has announced project Wai Wai World Craft, a "Social Game Creation Network" that lets fans build their own games. The Wai Wai World series may not be familiar to many modern gamers, but it was one of Konami's most innovative franchises when it first launched.
Back when Konami revealed its lineup for the 2025 Tokyo Game Show, it also teased some secret projects, sparking many fan theories and wild guesses. Few, however, expected one of the surprises to be the revival of one of the company's oldest franchises.
Konami Game Leaked for Nintendo Switch 2
One of Konami's biggest franchises is reportedly finally making the jump to Nintendo home consoles, according to a new Switch 2 game leak.
Wai Wai World Craft Seems to Be a Japanese Roblox Competitor
In a recent announcement trailer, Konami revealed Wai Wai World Craft, a tentative title for an ambitious game-making project. Similar to Roblox, the game will let users build their own games by modifying existing assets or using the AI assistant, "MagicPod," to create them. Notably, the project will feature characters from Konami's biggest franchises, just like the original Wai Wai World games. The upcoming title will also be free-to-play on Steam, iOS, and Android with item-based microtransactions, though it currently has no release date.
Based on the announcement trailer, Wai Wai World Craft appears to include built-in tools for editing pre-made maps and simplified settings for creating gameplay rulesets. The official webpage also confirms co-op experiences for up to eight players, along with a social hub where users can share their creations with others. While details are still limited, many are already calling it a Japanese version of Roblox, especially since the social hub strongly resembles Roblox's UI.
For those unfamiliar, Wai Wai World is a 1988 Famicom game in which players embark on a search-and-rescue mission to save Konami heroes before recruiting them. That said, the new Wai Wai World Craft project puts a fresh spin on that formula, giving it a new lease on life. The original Wai Wai World was a Japan-only release, which is one reason it isn't as well known as some of Konami's other projects. Unfortunately, Wai Wai World Craft may be a Japan-only game, too, mainly because there has been no English announcement despite promotion on the company's Japanese social media.
Some argue that now is the perfect time for Konami to release Wai Wai World Craft in Western markets, as Roblox has recently faced legal troubles and community backlash. They suggest that a new competitor could benefit users and perhaps even push Roblox to work harder to maintain its player base. It remains to be seen whether Konami will announce plans to make the title an international project or keep it limited to Japan.
