Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 will have players following Titus during the Tyranid invasion of an imperial planet. By the time Titus arrives, the invasion is in full effect, with the larger swarms and bioforms making landfall to eliminate all resistance and start breaking down the planet to its base resources.
Tyranids vary in size and utility, with the hivemind making them all with unique purposes. While trying to defend the planet and defeat the Tyranid threat you'll come face to face with many of these bioforms; here are some confirmed to be in the game.
7 Strangest Parts Of Warhammer 40K Lore
Warhammer 40K is packed with some of the strangest, most unsettling, or downright funny pieces of lore around.
8 Hormagaunts
- Fight in seemingly endless hordes.
- Weak defense and fights with close-ranged claws.
Hormagaunts make up the foundation of the swarm. Individually, they are weak and barely larger than the average human, but their strength comes in numbers. Hormagaunts often travel in groups ranging from a few dozen to a few hundred.
These massive swarms of Hormagaunts are directed by the Hivemind to throw themselves relentlessly at their enemy, with each one often being a mindless sacrifice just to distract the enemy from what else is hiding within the swarm. Hormagaunts will act as one of the most basic enemies you'll fight, with Titus able to cut down multiple in a single swing of his chainsword.
7 Termagants
- Weak defense and easy to kill.
- Easily mixes with Hormagaunts and shoots from within an incoming horde.
Termagants are nearly identical to
Hormagaunts except they carry guns instead of claws. The threat of Termagants is that dozens of them can easily blend into a swarm of hundreds of Hormagaunts, getting closer to line up better shots without being seen.
While a single Fleshborer shot from a Termagant won't pose much of a threat to a Space Marine, they also have strength in numbers. When you see a mass of Hormagaunts charging forward, it's important to not just sit back, as the Termagants within the swarm will slowly whittle down the defenders while the distraction Hormagaunts charge forward.
6 Gargoyles
- Weak but flies around fast.
- Overwhelms from above with vast numbers and speed.
Gargoyles are about the same size as Hormagaunts but have wings and carry a gun instead of claws. While it hasn't been shown if they will be an active enemy to fight in the game, large swarming masses of Gargoyles are seen in the skies in every trailer.
During the invasion of a main Tyranid force, Gargoyles are one of the first bioforms seen, covering the skies to disrupt flying vehicles and overwhelming anti-air defenses to make way for the main force to make planet-fall without immediate resistance.
5 Ravener
- Large size and claws for strong attacks.
- Can quickly slither around the battlefield to ambush enemies.
Raveners are roughly the size of a Space Marine and will stand face-to-face with Titus when standing up fully. Raveners may look like Tyranid Warriors from the waist up, but their serpent-like body makes them much faster.
Raveners move quickly around the battlefield to catch enemies off-guard and won't attack head-on as often as other Tyranids. Their massive claws make them a powerful assassin-like enemy that players should watch out for as they move low and fast through large swarms of enemies.
9 Games With Great Warhammer 40K Mods
Players who can't get enough Warhammer 40K should try these mods for other games to scratch that itch.
4 Lictors
- Can jump short distances instantly to get around defenses.
- Specialize in surprising and killing unsuspecting enemies.
While Raveners can be sneaky in a fight,
Lictor are the true assassins of the Tyranid army. Lictors are some of the smartest creatures in a Hive Fleet as they are created with intelligence to leave the Synapse of the Hive Mind and accomplish a task by any means necessary.
Lictors use stealth and fear to psychologically attack an enemy before dispatching them without being seen. While Lictors have less use during the intense battles of a full-scale invasion on a planet, it's not rare to still find them moving through a planet targeting important individuals critical to the defense of a planet.
3 Tyranid Warriors
- More robust than most frontline Tyranids.
- Come with various loadouts to specialize in ranged or melee combat.
Tyranid Warriors are versatile enemies and come in many different forms. Standing above swarms of gaunts, Tyranid Warriors are like the leaders of the front-line swarms as they connect the smaller drones to the synapse of the Hive Mind to keep all Tyranids thinking as one.
Tyranid Warriors are almost as strong as a Space Marine and come with multiple melee weapons. They also have two sets of arms letting them wield additional weapons that range from small cannons to smaller anti-infantry weapons. Tyranid Warriors focus a bit more on winning a fight than mindlessly throwing themselves at an enemy like a gaunt, meaning players will have to give them more attention when faced on the battlefield.
Warhammer 40K: The Strongest Factions According To Lore, Ranked
Warhammer 40K's lore is riddled with warfare among factions. Which of the many sides of the conflict are the most powerful?
2 Carnifex
- Tank-like creatures that are hard to kill.
- Charges head first at enemies.
Carnifex are some of the most dangerous threats in the Tyranid army. These creatures are massive hulks of armor that charge forward and rip even tanks apart with their massive talons. Carnifex themselves are the tanks of the Tyranid army, and their armor makes them difficult to take down as they charge head-first at defenders and fortifications.
While their initial charge is a massive threat, but their melee combat is just as big of an issue. In a one-on-one, a Carnifex can make short work of an unprepared Space Marine, making them one of the bigger threats players will be facing when fighting the Tyranid Swarm.
1 Hive Tyrants
- Massive leaders of the Tyranid swarm.
- Come with massive melee or ranged weapons, some larger than a Space Marine.
Hive Tyrant are large monsters that lead the Tyranid forces. These creatures stand much higher than a Space Marine, being much stronger and harder to kill than anything else on this list.
Hive Tyrants come in a few variations to add to their lethality and versatility, but none match the killing potential of those that wield a bonesword. Hive Tyrants are major threats to any that face them, with them potentially being boss-like monsters players will fight from time to time in Space Marine 2.
