At Gamescom 2025, lots of new titles were announced for gamers to look forward to, ranging from highly anticipated sequels to first looks at brand-new IPs. One particularly exciting announcement was the surprise reveal of the next installment in an iconic real-time strategy series: Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War 4.
Since the release of Dawn of War 3 almost a decade ago to mixed reception, players have been left to wonder when or even if they will get to play a new installment in the series. Now, with new developer KING Art at the helm, a release is practically around the corner in 2026. The reveal trailer for Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War 4 offers a wealth of details for players to analyze, hinting at possible storylines, settings, and returning characters. Moreover, observant viewers can spot potential unit lineups for the factions confirmed at launch.
Warhammer 40K: The Strongest Factions According To Lore, Ranked
Warhammer 40K's lore is riddled with warfare among factions. Which of the many sides of the conflict are the most powerful?
Space Marine Units
The Adeptes Astartes, commonly known as Space Marines, are quite possibly the most iconic faction from the Warhammer setting. Genetically modified super-soldiers armed with the most advanced and powerful weaponry the Imperium can bring to bear, these power-armored post-humans are humanity’s best hope in the grim darkness of the far future. As generalists, Space Marines can do a little bit of everything. With units tailored towards both melee and ranged combat, tough front-line infantry, and fast-moving skirmishers, this faction has something for every playstyle.
Represented in the Dawn of War franchise by the Blood Ravens chapter in previous titles, the Space Marines have been led by Chapter Master Gabriel Angelos and a host of other named characters. Thus far, only one returning character has been confirmed: Scout Sergeant Cyrus, played by Steve Blum. The fates of other characters remain to be seen.

Adeptus Mechanicus Units
Robed in red and bearing extensive cybernetic enhancements, Warhammer 40k' s Adeptus Mechanicus represents the technological priesthood of the Imperium of Man. However, they are not merely scientists and engineers. The Ad Mech make for deadly foes on the battlefield, and from what can be glimpsed in their limited gameplay footage, the tech-priests of Mars will be just as fearsome as ever. Dawn of War 4 will be the first time the Ad Mechs have appeared in this particular series, but players can expect devastating abilities, durable units, and particularly powerful vehicles.

Ork Units
If a society of spacefarers embraced a "might makes right" mentality, it would undoubtedly echo the bold and boisterous ways of Warhammer 40k's Orks. Orks are massive, green-skinned brutes with a taste for violence and very little else. They are one of the most common foes of the Warhammer 40k setting. The Ork playstyle has always been about shooting as much as possible (regardless of aim) before getting close for a good krumping. Having appeared in all Dawn of War installments thus far, it simply wouldn’t have been the same without a "Waaaaagh!" For players to come to grips with.

Necron Units
The robotic Necrons have found themselves in a galaxy ripe for the taking after having been asleep for a millennium. In their time, they rebelled against the C’tan, the star gods who granted their race immortality at the cost of their bodies and souls. Entombing themselves in planet-spanning crypts long ago, they have returned to retake the galaxy from the so-called “upstart races," employing weapons that once slew gods and bent reality itself. Durable enemies bearing powerful energy weapons, their ability to reanimate grants them incredible staying power to counterbalance their slow speed. Necrons are one of the best factions in Warhammer 40k for a reason.
