Summary

  • "We Were Liars" is number one on Amazon Prime Video and has a 63% Rotten Tomatoes rating.
  • The show is based on E. Lockhart's YA novel, but critics find the story slow-paced and characters lacking.
  • While a second season isn't confirmed, the possibility remains open with a prequel available for adaptation.

While one teen thriller series is rising up the Amazon Prime Video charts, fans and critics agree that the series has some flaws. In the past few years, Netflix has seen a lot of success with TV shows about young adults, from the dark sarcastic humor of Wednesday to the smart sci-fi hit Stranger Things. Amazon has released several shows about teenagers as well, including The Summer I Turned Pretty and the lackluster slasher TV adaptation of I Know What You Did Last Summer.

Although sometimes audiences and critics don't agree on the same movie or TV series, people seem to be on the same page about one Amazon series. The eight-episode first season was released on June 18th, 2025, and it has definitely gotten people talking.

We Were Liars Is Number One On Amazon Prime Video And Has A 63% Rotten Tomatoes Rating And Audience Score

Cadence (Emily Alyn Lind) on We Were Liars

According to Flix Patrol, We Were Liars is number one on Amazon Prime Video, and it's definitely a summer 2025 series with a lot of buzz.

Adapted from the popular young adult novel by E. Lockhart, which was published in 2014, We Were Liars tells the poetic story of Cadence Sinclair Eastman (Emily Alyn Lind), who is trying to remember the events of one important and life-changing summer. Cadence spends the season on Beechwood Island with the Sinclair family, who are wealthy and mysterious. Candice King, Mamie Gummer, and Caitlin Fitzgerald play the Sinclair sisters Bess, Carrie, and Penny. Other notable characters include Johnny Sinclair Dennis (Joseph Zada), Gat Patil (Shubham Maheshwari), and Mirren Sinclair Sheffield (Esther McGregor).

It's interesting to note that We Were Liars has the same Rotten Tomatoes rating and Popcornmeter score: 63%. While many consider We Were Liars to be a fun summer thriller, fans and critics agree that the show has a slow pace and characters who don't stand out when compared to other teen dramas. Although We Were Liars has been a hit on Amazon, some posted on Rotten Tomatoes and called it "boring" and full of "melodrama." One fan said the book is better, and another called the story "drawn out."

Critics are unsure that We Were Liars is all that different from other entries in the genre, from the popular mystery Pretty Little Liars to Cruel Summer, which lasted for two seasons and told eerie stories in three timelines. Glancing at the reviews shared on Rotten Tomatoes, it's clear that not everyone was invested in the mystery. Jonathan Wilson from Ready Steady Cut said the series has "go-nowhere subplots about boring nonsense, set against the idyllic backdrop of a holiday island." Angie Han wrote in The Hollywood Reporter about Cadence's "glacially paced awakening."

Although Lockhart's novel is beautifully written and the mystery is compelling, the story didn't quite translate to the small screen. Several viewers have been critical of the many King Lear references in We Were Liars, and while the book is written in a memorable poetic style, the show feels corny at times. It's also hard not to compare the show to Pretty Little Liars, which aired for seven seasons and balanced everyday young adult storylines with a main mystery that needed to be solved. Unfortunately, although the ending of We Were Liars has gotten people talking, that isn't enough to make the whole show work.

Will Fans Get To See We Were Liars Season 2?

While Amazon Prime Video hasn't renewed We Were Liars for a second season, it's possible to imagine the dark and poetic story continuing. If the show came back, it could be adapted from E. Lockhart's prequel Family of Liars, which was published in 2022. Lockhart's third novel in the series, We Fell Apart, will be released in November 2025, which suggests that the show could also get a third season.

Some of the show's actors have shared their thoughts on season 2. Candice King suggested to TV Line that the new episodes could be set in the 1990s, and Caitlin Fitzgerald said a prequel would be "fun."

However, while The Society was canceled after one season and the story wasn't resolved, We Were Liars does explain what took place that one summer. In an interview with Variety, co-showrunner Carina Adly MacKenzie spoke about season 1's conclusion and whether there could be more to Cadence's story. She said:

"the first season has a satisfying, powerful ending... We’d love the opportunity that exists for more story, so we’re hopeful that we’ll get to come back and do more. But also, should this be a limited series, I think it’s a beautiful story."
