- Expect a continuation of humorous horror tropes, with potential nods to modern slashers and dark twists in the upcoming season.
As a fan of clever horror movies that balance kills with humor, and as someone who has seen most of Jenna Ortega's projects, I really enjoyed Wednesday season 2. I was also excited to hear Ortega's comments about the second season heading in a darker direction than the first. This feels like the right path for the hit Netflix series, especially since the Addams Family movies have always been fairly bleak. After all, this is a family that regularly talks about death and other grim topics.
Now that Wednesday season 2 is coming sometime in 2025, Ortega is talking a little bit more about what fans can expect, and she recently gave an interview about the tone of the new episodes. I loved hearing Ortega share that one Wednesday season 2 episode is inspired by slasher films, and now I'm wondering which ones.
Wednesday Season 2 Needs To Be Absolutely Amazing Or The Wait Wasn't Worth It
After a long gap between seasons, there is an expectation level that Wednesday season two must.
I Think Wednesday Season 2 Could Be Inspired By These Slasher Movies
In an interview with Collider, Jenna Ortega talked about the tone of Wednesday season 2 and said that some scenes are inspired by the popular 1980s horror movies Prom Night and Carrie. Ortega said:
“I just feel like there are a lot of scenes and frames, and there’s a whole episode based off of slashers, and we make a lot of horror references. So, everything about it, I feel like we kind of had a little bit more trust, and therefore, we felt like we could do bigger, more elaborate sequences, which is nice.”
Since Wednesday season 1 was both funny and creepy, I think the slasher movie-inspired episode could be inspired by the Scream franchise. I don't think the Scream films are scary, but I don't think that's a problem, either. Both Wednesday and Scream are eerie and it sounds like, based on Ortega's comments, season 2 could feature horror movie imagery and dialogue about the genre.
I think it would be cool if the Wednesday season 2 slasher episode featured tropes from the Scream movies, such as Wednesday Addams being the final girl and her mysterious season 2 stalker acting like Ghostface. The stalker could follow the Evil Phone trope and text and phone the characters, which would scare them. But, of course, Wednesday would remain as fearless and confident as ever. Maybe in one scene, the stalker chases Enid Sinclair (Emma Myers), and she jokes about how horror movie characters make silly decisions that cost them their lives.
I would also be happy if Wednesday season 2 included references to popular modern slashers such as Halloween and Terrifier. Maybe Wednesday could talk about iconic villains like Michael Myers and Art The Clown, who may or may not be human. If there was a Halloween episode, maybe Wednesday could see someone dressed up like Michael Myers or Art The Clown at Nevermore Academy. She could wonder if they're the stalker or just an innocent student or teacher, which would be entertaining.
I appreciate the formula that slashers follow and think it's fun to find the common tropes in these movies, from the big parties that the main and minor characters attend to the idea that the killer is hiding in plain sight. It would be funny if Wednesday joked about the predictable nature of slashers and how she doesn't understand the decisions that final girls like Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) make.
What Horror Tropes Are Used In Wednesday Season 1?
Wednesday season 1 features several horror tropes, such as a scary monster lurking in the background, a murder mystery that needs to be solved, and Wednesday Addams being a Goth character. Although I want Wednesday to continue making biting and hilarious remarks in every scene she's in, I'm looking forward to the dark direction of the new episodes. I think the reveal that Tyler Galpin (Hunter Doohan) is the Hyde Monster is effective, and I hope that Wednesday has a memorable scene that matches that one.
I think Wednesday season 2 can please slasher fans if the main mystery is even more gripping than the first season's and if the characters laugh at common tropes. Since Nevermore Academy has students and teachers who are rebels who don't fit in, I can see them poking fun at the genre, no problem. Now that Wednesday has been at Nevermore for a while, she is more comfortable in her new environment, and she can devote even more time to finding her stalker. I would also be impressed if Wednesday season 2 featured a big, creative twist, which is something I love seeing in slashers, whether a brand new film or a long-running franchise.
