Weird RPG, a new indie role-playing game published by Indiecn, certainly lives up to its name, featuring a treasure trove of strange weapons, including one that changes stats depending on the player’s graphics card. The off-beat RPG has been getting some laughs across the internet and has even drawn comparisons to popular Soulslike and isometric Diablo-like games.
Released on October 1 on Steam, Weird RPG markets itself as a difficult, fast-paced action RPG filled with jokes and strange humor. The developer states the game is inspired by popular titles like Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice and the beloved indie rogue-like Hades. A cursory look at Weird RPG in action certainly shows those inspirations in full use, but the game’s main selling point is how bizarre it is and how many weird weapons players can find.
Perhaps one of Weird RPG’s best jokes, and the one that has been getting quite a bit of traction on social media, is The Sword of Poor Guy, which gives better stat boosts the worse a player’s GPU is and vice versa. One fan on Reddit running an RTX 2080 Super shared that they get the “special bonus” of potentially killing themselves anytime they attack with the weapon. Other graphics cards, such as the lower-powered GTX 1650, have better stat boosts like a bonus where each attack increases attack speed and movement speed by 1%. However, it does seem like there is a cap on what Weird RPG considers a good GPU; some users running an Nvidia RTX 3080 Ti report getting the same self-killing stat bonus as the RTX 2080 Super, and there is likely a limit on the lower end too.
The Sword of Poor Guy isn’t the only odd weapon players can find in Weird RPG. There are also voice-activated trousers that require players to speak into their microphones to trigger attacks and even weapons that become stronger the lower the frame rate is. Min-maxers playing Weird RPG may very well find themselves cartoonishly yelling into their mics while playing at 20 fps to create the best possible character. So far, fans seem to enjoy the game; Weird RPG currently sits at a “Very Positive” rating on Steam.
The timing for Weird RPG and its enthusiast GPU punishing weapons could not have come at a better time. The PC gaming space has all eyes on the latest and greatest graphics cards, including Nvidia’s flagship RTX 4090, Intel’s Arc GPU series, and AMD’s upcoming RDNA 3 cards. In a time when everyone seems to be clamoring for the best of the best, it’s nice to see Weird RPG celebrate those still hanging on to older but reliable GPUs.
Weird RPG is available now for PC.
