Wuchang: Fallen Feathers gives players a lot of items to help tip the scales in their favor against the difficult enemies and bosses that appear throughout the game. While a lot of players may focus on just getting straight stat increases on their character from leveling up, but there are a lot of ways to get temporary buffs.
One item that is received right at the beginning of the game is the Ancient Chisel. This item does a few different things, with one being a buff. Here's exactly what the Ancient Chisel does and if it's worth using.

What All Does the Ancient Chisel Do in Wuchang: Fallen Feathers?
The description for the Ancient Chisel is that it returns you to the last place you entered the dream, along with empowering you. This returns you to the last shrine you entered the dream at, but it operates differently than just dying.
- You lose all earned Mercury Points, unlike the fraction dropped when you die.
- Using this item does not increase your Madness like dying does.
- You receive one of two randomized buffs that last three minutes.
You can use the Ancient Chisel as much and as often as you'd like, as there is no restriction on when it can be used. The buff provided will reset every time the item is used, and entering the dream or dying will end the buff.

What is the Ancient Chisel Buff in Wuchang: Fallen Feathers?
The buff provided by the Ancient Chisel is randomized between a boost to your maximum HP or maximum Stamina. This is shown by the colored particle effect around your character after awakening at the Shrine. Green shows a Stamina buff, while Red shows an HP buff. The buff is in effect for three minutes, though the timer starts right when you spawn at the Shrine, so with the loading and standing up animation, you'll only get two minutes and fifty-five seconds.
This buff can be used and applied whenever you want, with the only downside being the full loss of all Mercury Points. If you're stuck on a boss or enemy that is close to a Shrine, this is a great way to get a temporary buff for the first part of the fight, and you can keep using the Chisel until you get the exact buff you want.
You can also use an Aurum Feather to give yourself an additional buff, though it is also randomized.
