Where Winds Meet is off to a blistering start, drawing over 2 million players on its first day. The past couple of years have been big for games rooted in Chinese mythology, with titles like Black Myth: Wukong and Wuchang: Fallen Feathers each drawing hundreds of millions of concurrent players. Now NetEase's Where Winds Meet has joined that company.

Hype for the Wuxia RPG has been building for a while now. NetEase and developer Everstone Studios first revealed Where Winds Meet at Gamescom 2022, drawing immediate attention with its vast world, impressive visuals, and open-world gameplay. Since then, the game has gone through a successful China-only launch and multiple popular playtests, and now it's making waves in the West.

Where Winds Meet Passes 2 Million Players in Just 24 Hours

The official Where Winds Meet account took to social media on November 16 to announce the game had passed the 2 million player mark within 24 hours of its release. According to the celebratory graphic, the RPG also landed among the top five most-played games on Steam and in the top three best-selling PlayStation Store games in at least seven regions. These figures may not come as a surprise to those who've followed the game for some time, as Where Winds Meet attracted over 15 million players in China in the months following its release there, but it's impressive nonetheless. It's also worth noting how the game has had to compete with other big names launching around the same time, most notably, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7.

Where Winds Meet also achieved a peak concurrent player count of over 170,000 people on Steam alone. That may not be enough to push it to the top of the charts, as ARC Raiders has pulled over 481,000 simultaneous players, but that peak is from Where Winds Meet's first day. There's still plenty of time for it to potentially climb higher, especially as the game launches in other regions and Everstone Studios releases new content down the line.

While Wuxia may still be something of a niche genre compared to some others in the West, its popularity is growing, and as it does, games like Where Winds Meet could rise to new heights. It also helps that Where Winds Meet is free-to-play despite its size, and it's not pay-to-win, as its only paid content is cosmetic. As game prices continue to climb higher, that low barrier to entry could help the game stand out, so it could be interesting to see where the game and those like it go from here.
