Episode Number

3

Air Date

July 27th, 2024

The anime that is blending fantasy and science fiction, Why Does No One Remember Me in This World?, is back this week with its third episode, "The Hero of the Demons." This episode was a lot more action-focused, which was better for keeping the viewer interested from start to finish. It had some great magic attacks, cool bad guys, and even managed to mostly make sense until near the end of the episode.

The good news for Why Does No One Remember Me in This World? Is that its rating on MyAnimeList has been climbing since what was not a great first episode, improving with better plot and character development in Episode 2 instead of overwhelming audiences with too much information. Episode 3 did an even better job of slowing down on exposition, revealing some interesting lore about the world while giving viewers time to process the information. This is good news for the future of the anime if it can keep the pacing like that.

Extremely Powerful Women

The Girls Really Stole the Show

The female characters in Why Does No One Remember Me in This World? Are arguably more interesting and dynamic than the male ones, and Episode 3 really drove that home. It also revealed more information about exactly who the mysterious Rinne is, and we got to see Jeanne in action for the first time. Rinne continues to be an intriguing character, who is revealed to be a mix of all the races from the Great War, which makes her hate and be hated by everyone. It also means that she can use a little bit of all of their powers, which explains how she is so strong, and likely why she was chained up in the space between worlds in the last episode, since she has the power to defeat anyone.

Jeanne and her right-hand woman, Falin, also had the chance to shine this week. Jeanne fights using both an angel weapon and elf armor, though not without a cost, as it is revealed that using this magic is slowly killing her. Falin, the only other person who knows that Jeanne is a woman, takes out a huge demon by herself using a weapon that comes from a dragon. Likely, using this weapon is also slowly killing her if the lore holds. It was great to finally see the two of them fighting instead of just hearing other characters talk about their skills.

Lastly, the woman who has likely left the biggest impression on viewers is the Hero of the Demons herself, Vanessa. Vanessa is not only a demon, but a beautiful succubus, with plenty of fan-service shots of her best assets throughout the episode. Beyond being beautiful, though, Vanessa also showed herself to be a formidable foe who is not afraid of collateral damage to get the results she wants. Rinne also said at the end of the episode that this Vanessa is more powerful than the one from her world, which means that the team is going to have a hard time if they actually want to defeat her in the upcoming episodes. She is the powerful antagonist that the anime needs to keep moving forward.

Cool Weapons, Armor, and Magic

Teaching Views Lore the Right Way

Episode 3 learned from Episode 2, dropping bits of lore in small tidbits that could actually be ingested by the audience. Through Rinne revealing her mixed heritage of races, she was able to name them one at a time, teaching viewers that beyond demons, angels, and humans, there were also dragons, spirits, dwarves, and mystical beasts in the Great War. Jeanne was shown to have clothing that could dispel magic because it was made by elves, and Falin's sword was powerful because it was made from part of a dragon.

Sprinkling in these little pieces of lore helps to build the bigger picture of the world without being overwhelming. The audience can put the pieces together to better understand a little at a time, learning more about the races and magic in Why Does No One Remember Me in This World? In a palatable way. Hopefully, the anime will continue to drop lore in this style as it becomes important, and not go back to info-dumping again any time in the upcoming episodes.

A Strange Twist

Here Comes the Sci-Fi Part

Near the end of Episode 3, things start to get quite strange, but also intriguing. The robot from last week came back out of nowhere, and was revealed to be called "Last Riser." It seems to have been triggered by Kai mentioning Sid's name, which also had a strange effect on Vanessa when she heard it. Viewers already know that parallel worlds exist in some capacity in Why Does No One Remember Me in This World?, since both Kai and Rinne come from different worlds than the one they are in now, and also different worlds from one another.

Last Riser makes that even more clear, and seems to be more powerful than initially imagined. Episode 2 made the strange robot seem like it was connected to Vanessa or the demons, even, considering it only came when Rinne called for Vanessa. But it seems to be a third party, not helping humans but also not helping the demons. Not only did it try to defeat Vanessa, it said it would "delete her code" from the world. Is this some kind of strange Matrix situation?

While most of the third episode of Why Does No One Remember Me in This World? Focused on the fantasy elements with lots of magic, monsters, and sword fights, Last Riser is a good reminder that the anime is not purely fantasy. Also, Saki and Rashan are literally waiting to turn off the electricity in the building if Kai needs a quick escape, which is not something found in typical fantasy stories. Why Does No One Remember Me in This World? Is working hard to keep viewers wanting more and questioning what is going on, which is what audiences will be wondering for the next week.
