Witch Watch Episode 1 Lives Up To Expectations With Great Comedy And Animation

Witch Watch is the latest Shonen Jump anime, and it may attract a similar audience as Dandadan with its romantic comedy tone.

Nico and Morihito Are Childhood Friends

At Some Point, They Part Ways

The debut episode of Witch Watch reveals that Nico has been friends with Morihito since they were young. Nico calls Morihito “Moihito” or simply “Moi-chan” because she can’t pronounce his name right. On the other hand, Morihito has no choice but to get used to his new nickname. Eventually, the two develop a close relationship as they spend more time with each other. However, unlike any ordinary child, Nico is a witch-in-training who often causes trouble for Morihito.

"Let's definitely meet again, okay?"—Nico to Morihito

At some point, Nico and Morihito have no choice but to part ways. During fourth grade, Nico leaves with her mother for the Holy Land of Witches to begin her formal training. But before she moves, she promises Morihito that she will train every day to become an amazing witch. She also vows to learn a magic spell that can fix his wounds. After all, Morihito often gets injured because of the bullies who pick on them.

Nico and Morihito’s Reunion

It’s not uncommon for childhood friends to find their way back to each other in romance anime, and Witch Watch is no exception, with Nico and Morihito reuniting after years of separation. While Nico is busy training in the Holy Land, Morihito is busy training in the Ogre Qiqong fighting style. They might be apart for years, but they were thinking about each other during their training sessions.

Nico and Morihito reunite in the first episode of the anime as well. Unbeknownst to them, their parents had already agreed on a new living arrangement. With Nico’s mother still in the Holy Land for special reasons and Morihito’s father away on a long-term overseas business trip, Nico is set to live with Morihito under the same roof. From that point on, they’ll live together and look out for each other.

"I wonder how much that klutz has grown"—Morihito

Soon enough, Nico returns home and finds herself causing trouble for Morihito again. She’s excited to live with Morihito, whom she thinks has grown up to be an “ikemen” or an incredibly handsome man. On the contrary, Morihito is a bit perplexed, realizing that Nico’s carelessness hasn’t changed one bit. Still, it’s clear that Morihito sees some positive changes in her and her magic, which has noticeably improved.

Nico and Morihito’s Strange Relationship

An Ogre Becomes a Familiar

Witch Watch Anime Release Date Announced

Technically, Nico and Morihito have a master-and-servant relationship in Witch Watch, with Morihito serving as an ogre familiar to the witch Nico. This arrangement came about because of their family ties. As it turns out, Morihito belongs to an ogre clan that descended from a lineage of familiars. It’s an unusual case, but Morihito’s family has an old pact with Nico’s family, which binds him to follow the code.

Even though Morihito is technically a familiar, his role is more like that of a bodyguard to Nico. He's tasked with keeping her safe at all costs, due to a prophecy divined by Nico’s mother. According to the prophecy, disaster will befall Nico within a year, so Morihito must become Nico’s familiar to stave off the disaster. In other words, Morihito must protect her from harm. He also needs to hide the fact that Nico is a witch and avoid unnecessary attention that could put them in a bad situation.

Is There Potential for Romance?

witch watch love

Yes, there’s potential for romance between Nico and Morihito, as the first episode of Witch Watch did not shy away from showing Nico’s feelings for Morihito. Not only did Nico say “I love you” to Morihito in her mind, but she also imagined how their relationship could develop as they began living together. Meanwhile, Morihito is a bit dense in the romance department, but there’s a huge chance he would share the same feelings as Nico as the plot unfolds.

"Moi became a really handsome guy!"—Nico to Morihito

Nico and Morihito may be opposites, but they complement each other well. While Nico has a habit of causing trouble, Morihito is there to handle her mistakes. The same goes for Nico, who can use her magic spells to support Morihito. Together, no challenge seems impossible for them to overcome. Who knows, they might end up together in Witch Watch sooner or later.
