Summary

  • 2022 roguelike indie Cult of the Lamb surprisingly attracted more players on PS Plus Extra than The Witcher 3 in August 2024.
  • The Witcher 3 saw a near-131% increase in players on PS Plus Extra this month, whereas Cult of the Lamb's player count skyrocketed by 338%.
  • When directly compared, Cult of the Lamb outperformed The Witcher 3 in player count by 55.4%.

Some newly published data shows that Cult of the Lamb has seen a bigger influx of players than The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt on PS Plus Extra. Both games were added to PS Plus Extra as part of the service's August 2024 lineup, but the popularity of the 2022 roguelike indie is unexpectedly greater than 2015 Game of the Year winner The Witcher 3.

Although The Witcher 3 is nearly a decade old, the action RPG has mostly maintained its relevance to date. Still considered one of the best open-world games out there, The Witcher 3 has a famously devoted fanbase that often pays tribute to it in rather extravagant ways, like recreating iconic locations from the RPG in real life. Naturally, then, the inclusion of The Witcher 3 in PS Plus Extra's August 2024 lineup was exciting for subscribers who either wanted to replay the game or try it out for the first time. However, it seems that a popular indie title also added to PS Plus Extra in August is drawing more buzz than The Witcher 3.

A recent report from TrueTrophies finds that Cult of the Lamb, a 2022 roguelike developed by Massive Monster and published by Devolver Digital, has been a much bigger hit with PS Plus Extra members than The Witcher 3. The renowned CD Projekt RED RPG saw a respectable player count boost of 130.93% after it was added to PS Plus Extra in August 2024, but it was still no match for Cult of the Lamb's whopping 338.81% player spike across PS4 and PS5. Granted, these numbers aren't directly comparable, but when pitted against each other, Cult of the Lamb attracted 55.4% more players compared to The Witcher 3.

Cult of the Lamb Trounces Witcher 3 in the PS Plus Player Charts for August 2024

These impressive stats not only make Cult of the Lamb the biggest PS Plus Extra addition for August, but also the 5th most popular debut on the service so far in 2024. The Witcher 3, meanwhile, ranked 32nd on TrueTrophies' most played charts, way up from 79th position last week. While the player splits for these games may subvert expectations, August 2024 has been a great month for PS Plus overall. A prior report revealed that PS Plus player counts increased in August compared to the previous month, so the newer game additions have evidently been more alluring for subscribers.

It must be noted, though, that TrueTrophies' data is collated from a sample size of 3.1 million PlayStation Network accounts, which is a tiny fraction of the 120 million-strong PlayStation install base. Therefore, these reports shouldn't be taken as an absolute measure of popularity for PS Plus Extra games. Regardless, with August now wrapping up, fans are looking forward to the announcement of PS Plus Extra's September 2024 lineup in the coming days.
