Summary

  • Doug Cockle supports Ciri as the main character in The Witcher 4, calling complaints about her "stupid."
  • Cockle emphasizes that Ciri has rich lore from the books for CDPR to explore in the new game.

Doug Cockle, the voice of Geralt of Rivia himself, has just spoken out about the controversy over Ciri taking his place as the main character of The Witcher 4. The next Witcher game marks a new era for CDPR’s dark fantasy RPG series, with a new protagonist stepping in as the titular monster hunter. Ciri will be that protagonist in The Witcher 4 after her supporting role in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

Many fans are excited to play as Ciri in The Witcher 4, but not everyone is on board with the shift from having Geralt as the main protagonist. In a trend that has become sadly common among titles like Assassin’s Creed Shadows and Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, some social media users have complained that The Witcher 4 is “going woke” by featuring a female playable character and arguing that it goes against the lore of the series. CDPR game developers have argued that this is not the case, and now Geralt himself is lending his support.

The Witcher 4 Should Follow In Cyberpunk 2077's Footsteps On Launch

The Witcher 4 may find similar success if it follows Cyberpunk 2077's approach to one type of release shortly after its launch.

Doug Cockle was reading and reacting to fan memes in a video published by Fall Damage when he came across one noting the complaints about Ciri in The Witcher 4. He quickly voiced his support for Ciri, calling the complaints about the game being woke “stupid” and expressing his excitement at the prospect of following a new, “cool” character in the next Witcher game. He also said that Geralt can’t be the main character in The Witcher forever, and the Witcher books have plenty of lore supporting Ciri’s new role as the lead protagonist.

Doug Cockle Calls Witcher 4 Ciri Complaints ‘Stupid’

Cockled added that if the so-called “fans” complaining about Ciri in The Witcher 4 had actually read the Witcher books from Andrzej Sapkowski, they would know that she has plenty of rich lore that would be prime material for CDPR to dive into with its next game. He said that this material largely went unexplored in the previous Witcher games due to Geralt being the focus, but now the time is right to dig deeper in The Witcher 4.

While he is stepping away from the spotlight in The Witcher 4, Doug Cockle will return as Geralt, though the extent of his presence in the game is unknown at this time. As Cockle himself has pointed out, Geralt’s story in the games seemingly concluded with The Witcher 3’s Blood and Wine DLC back in 2016. The Witcher 4 will instead shift the focus to Ciri, and it’s only fitting that the voice of Geralt is excited to pass the torch in the next game.
