Joining a new "Game Preview" beta program, the hit magical deck-building MMORPG Wizard101 is now available on Xbox consoles. Wizard101 was previously a PC exclusive but has suddenly made its way to Xbox systems in an unexpected way.

Originally launched back in 2008, Wizard101 sees players taking on the role of a young student at the Ravenwood School, where they study elemental magic through the use of deck building. The player must master their witchcraft by defeating various enemies across the unique realms of the Spiral, all in an effort to stop the nefarious plot of the evil wizard Malistaire. Similar to other massively multiplayer online role-playing games, Wizard101 has a small free-to-play portion of the game, but most of the title's content must be purchased. Fans just wanting to dip their toes into the fantasy tale can now try the game out for free courtesy of a new Xbox program.

MMORPGs can be daunting for new players. Luckily, plenty of stellar options exist for those looking to break into the world of online multiplayer.

The Xbox Store is currently offering a Game Preview of KingsIsle Entertainment's Wizard101, which is described as a "work in progress" that "may or may not change over time." Xbox is testing out a new preview beta program that allows players to try out various games without buying the full game, similar to Game Pass, but with limited access to the available titles. KingsIsle Entertainment previously stated that Wizard101 would not be joining Game Pass, so audiences were pleasantly surprised to see the game pop up on the Xbox Store. According to the Xbox Store page, the full version of the game is not currently available, but the preview has the potential to transition into a full release in the future. The Wizard101 Game Preview is available for free for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S systems.

Is the Xbox Version of Wizard101 the Same as the PC Version?

Just like the PC version of Wizard101, the Xbox Game Preview will also be free to play, though the scope of how much content will be available has not been revealed. Additionally, the Xbox version of Wizard101 will also feature microtransactions with the option to purchase Crowns, a unique in-game currency that unlocks powerful items, cards, mounts, pets, cosmetics, and more. While microtransactions in FTP games have faced criticism over the years, players are able to complete the full version of Wizard101 without the use of these additional purchases, with a Wizard101 subscription being the only necessary transaction for game completion. Xbox players can try the free Wizard101 Game Preview and have the option to purchase the game in its "current state."

Wizard101 continues to boast a dedicated PC player base years after launch and is even slated to receive a prequel game with the visual novel Ravenwood Academy: A Wizard101 Story. Whether the popularity of the MMORPG will translate to Xbox remains to be seen, but interested players can check out the current Game Preview of Wizard101 and stay tuned for any updates on the title's future on Xbox.
