MachineGames may have a third mainline Wolfenstein game in the works, its director has hinted. It's been a long wait since the last time in MachineGames' revamped take on the franchise, but fans may have something to look forward to, after all. While there's no official confirmation yet, a new Wolfenstein may be in the pipeline.
The alternate history shooter helped form the FPS genre as gamers know it today, but it hasn't had a new entry in several years. The 2019 spin-off Wolfenstein: Youngblood is the latest full Wolfenstein game, and the last mainline entry in MachineGames' revival was Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus, which came out two years prior. That ever-growing gap may leave some fans discouraged, but a recent update could have good news in store.

Wolfenstein is a franchise that has often played second fiddle to others in the gaming industry, but it deserves recognition for some of its games.
MachineGames Director Hints at Third Wolfenstein Game in New Documentary
In a YouTube documentary by Noclip on the making of Wolfenstein, MachineGames' Studio Head and Game Director Jerk Gustafsson said the studio has always imagined its Wolfenstein games as a trilogy. More interestingly for fans waiting for more, Gustafsson mentioned that MachineGames is "not done with Wolfenstein yet" and that it still has "a story to tell." Back in 2018, a Bethesda exec had said the company is "absolutely" making a third Wolfenstein game, but given the silence since then, it may be reassuring to hear a more recent update hinting at the same.
It's worth noting that Gustafsson said he "hopes" that the studio's work on Wolfenstein isn't over yet. That might suggest MachineGames has a plan and story for a third entry but may not necessarily have the go-ahead from Bethesda or other parties to make it. Earlier in 2025, fans noticed that MachineGames had canceled an unannounced project sometime between 2022 and 2024. There's a chance that this canned game was the sequel to The New Colossus, but given that this new documentary has come out after that cancellation, Gustafsson's words seem to indicate the final entry to the trilogy hasn't been axed just yet.
There is some more firm news fans of the franchise can look forward to. Amazon has confirmed that a Wolfenstein TV series is in the works with Maniac and Station Eleven's Patrick Somerville at the helm. Jonah Nolan, who also worked on Fallout and Westworld, is tied to the project, too, as is Gustafsson. The fate of the game series may be less certain, but Gustafsson's comments in the documentary may offer a glimmer of hope. Of course, nothing is certain for now, so it's best to take any unspecific or unofficial information with a grain of salt.
