Insomniac Won't Yet Commit to Wolverine PS5 Release Date

Insomniac isn’t quite ready to provide an official release date for Marvel’s Wolverine. A new game starring the X-Men’s resident Adamantium-infused berserker was announced back in 2021, but there hasn’t been much official information released since. So far, it is known that Spec Ops: The Line writer Walt D. Williams is on hand to pen a storyline that is said to be darker and more mature than Marvel’s Spider-Man games, and that Marvel’s Wolverine will be set in the same universe as Insomniac’s successful series of open-world superhero games.

Much of the discussion surrounding Marvel’s Wolverine has been centered around unofficial leaks and development issues. In late 2023, a massive amount of information about Wolverine was leaked to the public as part of a major data breach at Insomniac, including some alpha build footage and a list of the game’s voice cast. The development staff behind the game has also seen its fair share of upheaval, as former director Brian Horton announced that he was leaving Wolverine to work on Xbox’s Perfect Dark last October. Shortly before this, former Wolverine associate narrative director Mary Kenney confirmed that she was also departing Insomniac for a senior writer job at CDPR.

These potential setbacks have left gamers wondering when Marvel’s Wolverine will be released, but it seems that Insomniac isn’t ready to give a solid answer just yet. In a recent interview with Variety, new Insomniac co-head Chad Derzern declined to answer if Marvel’s Wolverine is coming out in 2025, stating that while Insomniac is excited about the project, the staff behind it has to remain tight-lipped for the time being. “As much as we have pent up excitement [about Marvel’s Wolverine], we got to hold on to it. So that’s about as much as we could say about our upcoming projects today.”

Marvel’s Wolverine Devs Aren’t Ready to Confirm a Release Date

As stated before, very little is officially known about Marvel’s Wolverine as of this writing, though there are many leaks and rumors surrounding the game’s plot and gameplay. Insomniac took note of the growing demand for new information last summer, assuring eager gamers that more details about the project will be revealed when the time is right.

As much as we have pent-up excitement [about Marvel’s Wolverine], we got to hold on to it. So that’s about as much as we could say about our upcoming projects today.

Shortly before The Game Awards 2024, gaming industry insider Jeff Grubb noted that Marvel’s Wolverine is reportedly fairly far along in development and that Insomniac could be getting ready to reveal more about the much-anticipated superhero title. While there is still no word on the game’s official release date, some still believe that it could launch sometime this year - perhaps as a competitor to the upcoming Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra from Skydance.
