Summary

  • The canceled Wonder Woman game is said to have been similar to God of War, and once used the Nemesis System for NPC recruitment.
  • Monolith faced issues in recent years, including a planned original IP being scrapped by Warner Bros.
  • WB's gaming division continues to struggle as games like Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and MultiVersus underperform.

According to inside sources, the recently canceled Wonder Woman game might have been similar to God of War. While DC fans were naturally excited when Middle-earth: Shadow of War developer Monolith announced a Wonder Woman game at The Game Awards 2021, the lack of news in the years since left some worried about the project. These fears only grew when an insider report from Warner Bros. Claimed that development on Wonder Woman was restarted from the ground up following a staff reshuffling, setting its possible release back years.

The final blow then came earlier this week with the announcement that Monolith’s Wonder Woman game has been canceled, with no less than three WB-owned developers, including Monolith itself, shutting down with it. Gamers looking forward to playing as DC’s Amazonian champion in a triple-A title have voiced their disappointment over this news, especially since it could mean that Middle-earth’s much-praised Nemesis System, which the Wonder Woman game would have reportedly used, won’t be seen in a new game for some time.

Canceled Wonder Woman Game Praised by Comic Book Writer

A comic book veteran attached to the canceled Wonder Woman game reveals fresh information about Monolith’s ill-fated project.

Bloomberg gaming reporter Jason Schreier, who previously shared an insider’s look into the Wonder Woman game’s troubled development, recently shed further light on the doomed title while speaking with Kinda Funny Games. According to him, Wonder Woman was originally going to utilize a modified version of the Nemesis System that would see Wonder Woman recruit NPCs as allies, before being retooled into a more traditional action game in the style of God of War.

Wonder Woman Game Would Have Been Like God of War

Wonder Woman's ultimate cancelation was only part of Monolith's problems before it was shut down. Shortly after the release of Middle-earth: Shadow of War back in 2017, the studio reportedly started planning an original IP codenamed “Legacy,” which Schreier says would have used ideas from the Nemesis System in addition to “procedural narrative thing experimenting.” However, Warner Bros. Eventually scrapped the project after three years due to the parent company seemingly not being interested in new IP. This led to many leading Monolith staffers leaving the company, which in turn impacted future projects like Wonder Woman.

Warner Bros.’ Gaming division as a whole has seen similar issues over the past few years, with high-profile games like Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and MultiVersus underperforming and potential projects based on DC characters like The Flash and John Constantine being canceled for one reason or another. Monolith’s Wonder Woman game is yet another casualty of this, and there will likely be plenty more information about the ill-fated project as more insiders share their knowledge about what could have been.
