A cryptic tweet from Platinum Games' official Twitter account has started kicking the rumor mill into full gear, as fans attempt to dissect the post for hints at future projects like Okami 2 or Bayonetta 3. Currently, the most popular theory circling around in the crowd, is that this tweet is Platinum's way of secretly hinting at a brand new Wonderful 101 game.
This isn't the first time that Platinum has hinted at Wonderful 101 being put back in development, having made a similarly cryptic post in 2017 implying that the game may be coming to the Switch. Whether this new tweet means that fans should expect Wonderful 101 to hit the Switch soon or not is still up in the air, but the overall reception of the tweet suggests that there is at least a market for the game on the new console.
The tweet in question is little more than a picture of Director Hideki Kamiya being photobombed by Platinum Games' CEO Kenichi Sato. However, perceptive fans have noticed that there is a Switch sitting in the corner of the photo, and the clock on Kamiya's computer screen says 101 on it from both the time and date. Additionally, this screen with the 101 Easter egg is the only one that is on, and seems to be left specifically on some sort of Platinum Games screensaver, lending favor to the displayed time being intentional.
For those that are unfamiliar with The Wonderful 101, the game is a Wii U release from Platinum Games led by Kamiya and produced by Atsushi Inaba. In the past, Kamiya and Inaba had also worked together on Okami as well as Viewtiful Joe, the latter of which shares its stylized asthetic and themes with The Wonderful 101. Unfortunately, however, the lackluster performance of the Wii U kept the exclusive title from catching on to the same degree as its predecessors, which is why fans are excited to see it come to a more successful system.
Now, with Platinum Games seemingly vying for more independence in game development, working on more ports and updating previous successes seems like a great way to begin self-funding. While the company has had plenty of commercial success in the past with titles like Bayonetta, and last years Astral Chain, not everything has gone smoothly for the developer. So if the company does want to earn and maintain its independence, it'll take more than just remakes and ports to move forward, which makes it fortunate that Platinum has games like Babylon's Fall in the works as well.
The Wonderful 101 is available now for the Wii U.
