Wordle is a simple-to-learn but hard-to-master word puzzle game brought to players by the New York Times Games. This word puzzle game presents a new challenge every day, and today's word is difficult enough that some players might be out looking for a bit of help with it.

How To Play Wordle

In order to play this viral word game, players will first need to make sure they are in the right place. To play the original version of Wordle and not one of Wordle's many clones and copycats, they should head to the New York Times Games website or the New York Times Crossword and Wordle App. Other versions will have different answers than what is listed here, and they can even have slightly different rules as well.

Next, players need to choose a starter word. The best starting words in Wordle:

  • Must be five letters long.
  • Must be a real word.
  • Should contain five different letters.
  • Should contain two or three vowels.
  • Should not be a plural noun ending in S or ES.
  • Should not be a previous answer.
  • Cannot be a proper noun.

Once a great starter word is chosen, players can type it into the Wordle grid and press enter. This will cause the colors of the starting word's letters to change, with each color meaning something different.

  • Letters that turn green are correct and in the right place in the word.
  • If a letter becomes yellow, it is right but in the wrong place in the word.
  • Gray letters are incorrect and won't be in the answer of the day.

Given these clues, players need to pick a second word. Type this word into the grid, press enter, and these letters will also change colors, giving players even more clues to get them closer to the answer. Players have a grand total of six tries every day to get to the answer before they lose. Puzzles reset every day at midnight local time.

After puzzles are complete, the Wordle menu will pop onto the screen. This menu contains all the Wordle stats, including total puzzles played, how many the player has won, and more. There is even a countdown clock for the next puzzle.
