How To Play Wordle

Wordle is a very popular game that went viral in early 2022. The simple setup and versatile rules of Wordle made it ripe for copying; the internet exploded with all sorts of clones. In order to make sure players are in the right spot and not one of the many copies, they will need to head for either the New York Times Games website or the New York Times Crossword app. Other versions will have different answers than what is listed here, and they can even have slightly different rules too.

Here's how to play Wordle:

Choose a starting five-letter word. This word must be a real word, not a proper noun, and should have five different letters in it. Players should avoid both previous answers and plural nouns ending in S or ES.
Type the chosen starter word into the Wordle site.
Press enter.
The letters of the word will change colors, and each color means something different.
Green letters are right, gray are wrong, and yellow letters are right but in the wrong place in the word.
Try another word that fits all the clues from the first word.
Type that into the Wordle grid, and hit enter. The letters of this word will also change colors, giving players even more clues.
Keep trying new words and getting new clues until guessing the correct answer, or the player runs out of their six total tries.
There is only one puzzle per day, and they reset at midnight local time.
After the puzzle is complete, make sure to check out the Wordle menu. It will pop up after the puzzle is concluded, or the player presses the graph button in the upper right-hand part of the screen. This menu has the total number of puzzles played, a player's winning streaks for Wordle, guess distribution, other stats, and even a countdown timer to the next puzzle.
