How To Play Wordle

Playing Wordle requires that players head to the right place first. Since Wordle was so popular on Twitter and other social media sites, several clones popped up all over the internet. The original and the subject of this article is the New York Times Games version. Different Wordles will have different answers than what is listed here, and many of them even have slightly different rules too.

Once in the right place, players need to start by picking the best possible starting Wordle word. This word:

Needs to be five letters long.
Must be a real English word.
Should contain five different letters.
Should have two or three vowels.
Cannot be an offensive word.
Cannot be a proper noun.
Should not be a plural noun ending in S.
Should not be a previous answer.
Should contain mostly common letters.

Once a great starter word is chosen, type it into the Wordle grid, then press enter. This will cause the letters to change to one of three colors, and each color has a different meaning that will give players clues to the answer.

The letters that become green are right and in the right place or places in the word.
If a letter turns yellow, it is right but in the wrong place or places in the word.
Gray letters are incorrect and will not appear in the answer for today.

Given these clues, players will need to try another word and get even more clues to the word of the day. Players have a total of six tries to get to the answer before they lose the game. There is only one puzzle per day, and these reset at midnight local time. This shortage of puzzles every day is part of the reason why there are so many different popular Wordle clones out there even though the original is still live and well.
