How To Play Wordle
Before learning the rules of Wordle, players will want to make sure that they are in the right place. The version of Wordle that this article is about is the original version which is owned and hosted by the New York Times; it can only be accessed through the newspaper's Games website or the New York Times Crossword and Wordle App. Other versions will have different answers and may have slightly different rules compared to what is here.
- To start, choose a starting word. This five-letter word must be a real word that is not a proper noun or an offensive word. Players should choose a word with five different letters in it. They should avoid previous Wordle answers and plural nouns ending in S, as these can't be the answer today.
- Type the starting Wordle word into the website.
- Press enter.
- The letters of the starter word will change colors.
- Green letters are correct and in the right place(s) in the word.
- Yellow letters are right but in the wrong place(s) in the word.
- Gray letters are incorrect and won't be in the answer today.
- Try another word that fits the clues given from the previous try. Type it into the site. Press enter. The letters of this word will change colors as well, giving players more clues to the answer.
- Keep trying until players run out of their six total tries or the answer is guessed correctly.
- There is only one puzzle per day for everyone, and new puzzles appear on the Wordle site and app at 12:00AM local time.
- After the puzzle is complete or when a players presses the graph-like button in the upper right-hand corner of the screen, the Wordle menu will appear. This menu contains a countdown timer until the next puzzle and a variety of stats for the player. These include winning streaks, total puzzles played, and more.
