How To Play Wordle
While Wordle has spawned plenty of copycats and clones, the original was created by the developer of powerlanguage and was purchased by the New York Times Game in February. This is where the original is still hosted, and everything in this article will be about the NYT's version. Other Wordles might have slightly different rules and will probably have different answers. Here is how to play this version.
Head to the site and choose a great starting Wordle word. This word:
- Must be a five-letter long English word.
- Cannot be a proper noun.
- Should contain common letters and a vowel or two.
- Shouldn't be an offensive word.
- Should be the Americanized versions of words.
- Shouldn't be a plural noun ending in S; these can be used for guesses but cannot be answers.
Type the chosen starting word into the top line of the 5x6 grid on the Wordle website. Press enter. This should cause the letters of the chosen word to change colors, giving players some clues as to the real word of the day.
- Those letters that turn green are correct.
- Gray letters are incorrect.
- If a letter is yellow, it means the letter is in the word somewhere, but it is currently in the wrong position in the word.
Try a new word based on these clues, press enter, and get more hints based on the colors those letters turn. Keep trying until the six guesses run out or the word of the day is guessed correctly. Puzzles reset daily at midnight local time.
