The dungeons are a diverse collection of instances that represent different conflicts throughout the expansion. They include the underground constructs of the Nubians, the titanic facilities among the peaks, Scourge-filled locations, and some experimental dungeons that are certain to leave an impression on the player. Some of those dungeons include unique and novel mechanics, and the best of them capture all of these factors in one epic experience.

  • Location: Borean Tundra

The Nexus is in the lower part of the Eye of Eternity, the home of Blue Dragonflight. The dungeon involves fighting the Blue Dragons and their mortal allies. It is colored in icy azure, which corresponds with the color of arcane energy in the Warcraft universe, making the players feel as if they are in a truly magical place.

The heroic version of this dungeon includes faction-unique encounters as the soldiers are pitted against each other. The final boss is Keristrasza, a broken and brainwashed Red Dragon from a questline in Coldarra; she used to be an ally but has now been put in a state where a mercy kill is the best she can hope for, making it a tragic encounter.

7 Trial Of The Champion

Proving Your Worth

This dungeon was added in patch 3.2, and it takes a unique approach. The Trial of the Champion includes only one arena, Tirion’s Colosseum, where he tests countless champions to see whether they’re worthy of challenging Arthas himself. The dungeon includes conversations and comments made towards the players and their characters.

The encounters are also unique, with some of them being randomly picked. The first boss is three chosen champions from the opposite faction, the second boss is a random choice between two argent champions, while the final enemy to face is a mysterious Black Knight who is an agent of the Lich King.

6 Utgarde Pinnacle

Challenging The King

  • Location: Howling Fjord

Howling Fjord is known to be one of the most beautiful zones in the Wrath of the Lich King expansion, but it is far from peaceful. It is controlled by Vrykul, who made a pact with the Scourge. Their seat of power is the Utgarde Pinnacle, and King Ymiron rules from there. This dungeon is designed in a Nordic and Viking-inspired style that the players can explore.

The final boss is Ymiron himself, and he is fought directly in his throne room, making it a grand and epic battle. This dungeon serves as a culmination of the entirety of the Howling Fjord’s story.

5 Azjol-Nerub

Descending Into The Pit

Anub'arak World of Warcraft Nerubians Azjol-Nerub Wrath of the Lich King
  • Location: Dragonblight

Azjol-Nerub is an underground kingdom that was first introduced in Warcraft 3 along with its king, Anub’arak, who helped Arthas get through the tunnels of the kingdom. In WoW, it returns as a dungeon where players can face the broken king himself.

This dungeon involves descending deeper into spider-made caverns, which creates a uniquely eerie and uneasy atmosphere. Its short length ensures that it does not get stale, and the final boss is a notable character in the lore, which makes the last encounter feel more epic and meaningful than many other dungeons in the game.

4 Drak-Tharon Keep

Cleansing The Path To Zul’Drak

  • Location: Grizzly Hills

It is very common for WoW expansions to feature at least one story arc related to trolls, and WOTLK is no exception. Zul’Drak is a zone filled with Ice Trolls, and Drak’Tharon Keep is the gateway to their domain. The surrounding storyline revolves around the player teaming up with a troll named Drakuru, who guides them through it.

The dungeon is full of the clashing forces of Scourge and Ice Trolls, making it feel like a proper warzone, all while the player must battle both sides. In the end, Drakuru betrays the player and joins the Lich King, which presents a dramatic twist and foreshadows the storyline that later unfolds in Zul’Drak.

3 Halls Of Lightning

Battling The Corrupted

Halls of Lightning
  • Location: Storm Peaks

The Storm Peaks are a unique location in the expansion. It is removed from the threat of the Scourge and instead focuses on the Old God Yogg-Saron and the army of titan constructs he has corrupted. The Halls of Lightning are part of Ulduar and are controlled by Loken, a traitorous guardian who acts as the antagonist of the zone.

The halls themselves are a grand titanic facility filled with unique architecture that reminds players of ancient temples. Numerous mechanical guardians swarm those halls. The final battle is against Loken, who demonstrates his disgust for mortals, yet he is proven weaker than them after his downfall.

This is a unique dungeon added to the Caverns of Time, a zone first opened in Burning Crusade. Players can travel through Old Stratholme and help Arthas purge it from the Scourge and the living.

The Culling of Stratholme will have players fight both old enemies that Arthas has exterminated and members of the Infinite Dragonflight who try to stop Arthas and disrupt the timeline. This dungeon offers a unique and memorable experience while also presenting some moral dilemmas around helping Arthas kill innocents.

1 Halls Of Reflection

Escape From An Icy Terror

Icecrown Citadel in WoW - WoW Features Players Miss
  • Location: Icecrown

A dungeon added in patch 3.3, the Halls of Reflection are perfect at capturing an atmosphere of hopeless terror. Depending on the faction, it is a grim place and the final dungeon in a series, following either Jaina or Sylvanas. The hollow atmosphere and the feeling of being watched make this dungeon extremely memorable.

The dungeon begins with meeting Uther Lightbringer and receiving his guidance on fighting the Lich King and its aftermath. Eventually, Arthas himself attacks and engages Jaina/Sylvanas. The final encounter involves players escaping Arthas and fighting off endless hordes of undead. They barely escape with their lives, which makes this dungeon very tense and its resolution that much more epic.
