World of Warcraft recently fixed a glitch that was scaling old Legendary weapons up to current power levels, only to cause another one that dropped current gear down to item level 1. Though this Dastardly Duos bug will almost certainly be fixed soon, this hilarious series of glitches has made for some memorable moments in World of Warcraft.

Dastardly Duos is a new limited-time event in World of Warcraft where players can challenge waves of old-school enemies and bosses alone or in groups, earning points based on their performance. In addition to Champion gear and multiple achievements, fans can get a mount, pet, and several toys by completing weekly quests involving the feature.

That said, Dastardly Duos has not been without a few glitches. One of its most prominent ones was causing Legendary items to scale up in item level to make them as powerful as gear in current content. This bug affected not only the more recent Legendary weapons in World of Warcraft like Nasz’uro, the Unbound Legacy or Fyr’alath, the Dream Render from Dragonflight, but old gear like Shadowmourne from Wrath of the Lich King. Unfortunately, this interaction was not intentional, causing Blizzard to implement an undocumented hotfix that removed this functionality.

WoW Item Level Scaling Problems in Dastardly Duos

However, while fixing this bug, Blizzard accidentally caused another one to appear. Dastardly Duos scales an item's max level based on equipped gear, to a maximum score of 619, which was the same function that caused the Legendary weapon issue in the first place. After this hotfix, characters who had a Tabard or Shirt – cosmetic slots that aren’t counted towards gear score – sometimes had their maximum item levels reduced to 1, making their equipment functionally useless, and Dastardly Duos impossible to complete.

This was obviously not Blizzard’s intention, and will almost certainly be fixed very soon. Players who happen to encounter this bug before it is squashed can work around it by unequipping their Shirt and Tabard, though they may need to requeue into Dastardly Duos in World of Warcraft after leaving their instance group in order to fully fix the issue.

It is unfortunate that the original Legendary weapon scaling was fixed in the first place. Fans who obtained these items often stash them in their banks for safekeeping, even though they are no longer current content. These old Legendary items already had one use removed from them when the scaling system for Timewalking dungeons and raids in World of Warcraft was changed back in Patch 11.0.5, preventing them from being usable in those instances. With their relevance removed from Dastardly Duos as well, players who own these rare items will have to wait and hope that a new use for them arrives some day.
