Ethereals are getting a big facelift in World of Warcraft Patch 11.1, with players datamining dozens of new models for the mummy-like energy beings. While this only proves that the Ethereals will be playing some kind of role in World of Warcraft in the near future, some fans are hoping it means they could eventually become an allied race at some point during the Worldsoul Saga.

Recently, World of Warcraft revealed further details about Patch 11.1, Undermined. The Goblin-themed update takes players to the dazzling subterranean capital of the Goblins, where they will finally have the chance to take down the self-styled “Chrome King” Gallywix after over a decade of dealing with his scheming.

However, fans have discovered some new models that could indicate an unexpected twist in the patch. Though the Patch 11.1 Public Test Realm is not going live until January, World of Warcraft players have begun datamining the upcoming update in hopes of finding new details. Among them, fans found tons of refurbished Ethereal models, featuring different body types, bandage styles, armor, and clothing. Wowhead compiled over two dozen of these variants, giving players hope that these detailed models may eventually become a playable allied race.

New Ethereal Models in World of Warcraft Patch 11.1

The Ethereals are energy beings from the world of K’aresh who, after losing their physical forms in an arcane cataclysm, bound their essence to bandages, giving them a mummy-like appearance. There are many factions of allied and enemy Ethereals that fans have encountered over the years, but the new models appear to be of the shadow-infused variety, similar to Locus-Walker – Alleria Windrunner’s enigmatic ally and mentor in mastering the Void in WoW.

While there has been nothing to suggest these new Ethereal models could be for an unannounced allied race, that has not stopped players from speculating. The variety of models could easily translate to character creation options, and the race likewise has a lot of investment in the Worldsoul Saga – Xal’atath was involved in the destruction of their homeworld, and their trade-focused society has much in common with the Goblins of Undermine. That said, the only thing these models have confirmed is that Ethereals will likely be playing a role in World of Warcraft's Worldsoul Saga soon.

World of Warcraft: The War Within already has another theoretical allied race waiting in the wings. The Haranir are a new race of reclusive humanoids that appear in the expansion who physically resemble both Night Elves and Trolls, and who have tons of internal character customization options and model animations. Orweyna, the Haranir who appeared in The War Within cinematic trailer, plays a prominent role in Patch 11.0.7 and 11.1, so fans will have to see if they will eventually be able to play one of her people in the future as well.
