Summary

  • Player housing has been confirmed for World of Warcraft's Midnight expansion in 2026, fulfilling a highly-requested feature.
  • A new teaser shows a decorated chamber with iconic items that hints at customization options.
  • Details on how player housing will work remain scarce, but a formal reveal is expected in 2025.

World of Warcraft has officially confirmed player housing is coming in the Midnight expansion. Though few details are available at the moment, World of Warcraft fans can expect to finally be able to customize their own living spaces when the second expansion of the Worldsoul Saga releases in 2026.

Player housing is a popular MMO game mechanic that allows fans to decorate a personalized living space. While WoW dipped its toes into it with Garrisons in Warlords of Draenor, it lacked the depth gamers truly wanted, and World of Warcraft streamers like Preach suspected player housing could never truly come to Azeroth with its current systems.

Despite this, World of Warcraft recently shocked fans by revealing the highly-requested feature was, in fact, on its way. At the end of the inaugural Warcraft Direct presentation, World of Warcraft game director Ion Hazzikostas segued into a final teaser by saying “And speaking of home, the team does have one more thing to share with you,” after which a short video played, featuring a Warrior wearing the revamped WoW Tier 2 Battlegear of Wrath armor entering a cozy chamber filled with decorations. A mug with the words “Home Sweet Home” on it, and developer comments on Twitter after the fact, confirmed that this teaser was indeed for player housing in Midnight.

Player Housing Coming in World of Warcraft: Midnight

While little information is available as to how World of Warcraft player housing will work, looking at the teaser trailer, alongside other MMO systems, may give a clue. The walls of the chamber are decorated with iconic weapons like Quel’delar, the Night Elf Huntress Warcraft Rumble toy, a training dummy, and the mounted head of Onyxia, implying fans may be able to decorate their home with collected transmogs, toys, and other furnishings. It remains to be seen if this housing system will be instanced like Guild Wars 2, or if there will be public wards like Final Fantasy 14, though the former system seems like it would work better for WoW.

According to World of Warcraft’s roadmap for 2025, a formal reveal for Midnight is planned for next summer. Beyond giving fans a glimpse at the story and zones coming in the new expansion, it will likely contain the first details about this player housing system.

This wasn’t the only thing announced for WoW at the Warcraft Direct. December 17 has been officially locked down as a release date for Patch 11.0.7, and World of Warcraft even gave players a first look at Patch 11.1, a Goblin-themed update called Undermined. Needless to say, fans have plenty to look forward to in World of Warcraft over the next few years.
