World of Warcraft players who fish in the Dalaran fountain during the opening scenario of The War Within will find a coin belonging to Xal’atath. This Easter egg is a callback to Wrath of the Lich King and Legion, where fans can fish up coins belonging to various World of Warcraft characters at that fountain.

The War Within is hitting WoW with a bang. Within the first hour of the World of Warcraft expansion, players will find the floating city of Dalaran besieged by Xal’atath, the main antagonist of The War Within. Though they put up a valiant fight, promotional material and beta testing alike have confirmed the city does not arrive in Khaz Algar in one piece.

World of Warcraft Players Can Get Personalized Stories Narrated By Xal'atath

World of Warcraft reveals a new activity in which players can have their characters' stories narrated by Xal'atath, the villain of The War Within.

However, WoW fan Lazey recently discovered that the opening scenario of the expansion has a specific callback to an iconic feature of Dalaran. The intro scenario where Dalaran is attacked by Xal’atath and Queen Ansurek, the first raid boss of WoW: The War Within, was recently available for testing in the beta, and during one of the last phases, players can access the fountain in the Eventide. Should fans try to fish there, they will find a single item: Xal’atath’s Rusty Coin. Wowhead corroborated that the item appears to be a guaranteed pull on the first fishing attempt at the fountain, regardless of skill, so picking up this memento, and reading its malevolent message, is not hard.

Xal’atath’s Rusty Coin in WoW: The War Within

"The soul of your world, in the palm of my hand."

This coin is a callback to the Wrath of the Lich King and Legion versions of Dalaran, in which fans can fish up dozens of coins with wishes from heroes and villains of WoW from the very same fountain. Collecting them all rewards World of Warcraft players with two achievements: The Coin Master and The Wish Remover. While there does not appear to be any achievement for acquiring Xal’atath’s Rusty Coin, characters still might want to claim this last coin from Dalaran’s fountain before it is ostensibly destroyed.

It won’t be long until players can find Xal’atath’s coin for themselves. Early Access for WoW: The War Within starts at 3 PM PDT – mere hours from press time – for fans who got the Epic Edition, with the full release exactly four days later for everyone else.

Fans lucky enough to attend Gamescom can also try out the Escape from Dalaran VR experience at the Blizzard booth from now until August 25. While they won’t be able to fish up Xal’atath’s coin, they can experience a four-dimensional flight through Dalaran, and even catch a glimpse of Azj-Kahet, the kingdom of the Nerubians in World of Warcraft.
