World War Z has released an April update loaded with plenty of new additions and numerous bug fixes. The popular third-person survival shooter, loosely based on the book and film of the same name, debuted in 2019 to mostly positive reviews. World War Z has continued to receive support through regular updates and patches since its launch, with the latest one set to polish gameplay and introduce new features for players to survive the zombie hordes.

For many, World War Z might not reach the heights of other blockbuster zombie-inspired hits like Resident Evil and Left 4 Dead, but it has carved out a solid following and an active player base. Known for its large swarms of fast-moving zombies, World War Z features some of the best zombies in the genre. Combined with its co-op gameplay that lets players team up to take out the zombie plague, it remains a fan favorite for many, and the new update aims to boost its appeal even further.

As recently announced on the Saber Support official website, the World War Z April 2025 patch is live as of April 8. It features a heavily reworked Extinction Mode, which can now be unlocked by completing any map on insane difficulty or higher. Extinction Mode also includes two new Episodes to choose from, with rewards for completing them. Additionally, the patch adds seven new mutilators and reworks three existing ones. The update will also introduce new Community Challenges and a bevy of fixes to resolve current issues.

The April patch comes fresh on the heels of the recent World War Z January update, which brought quality-of-life improvements, bug fixes, and additional sound effects and animations. The limited-time Community Challenges introduced in the latest update will offer players impressive rewards, such as the Royal Vengeance Heavy Weapons Skin Pack. While the patch notes didn’t go into detail about the new mutators, some of the names, like Acid Spit, provide a hint as to what they may do.

On top of the new additions and reworks, the April update also seeks to address numerous bugs plaguing the game, including fixing connection issues when starting full-party sessions. In the past, World War Z has experienced major problems, such as the game crashing and forcing players to do a hard reset to resolve it. This bug was eventually fixed, and the latest swath of fixes aims to smooth out even more kinks in gameplay.

The latest update for the zombie title has plenty in it for fans to look forward to. For many, World War Z is already one of the best co-op zombie games out there, and the new round of improvements aims to build on its solid foundation, making it an even better version of itself.

New Content

  • Reworked Extinction Mode:
    • The mode is now unlocked after completing any map on the Insane difficulty or higher.
    • The mode now includes two Episodes to choose from and the reward is given for fully completing one of them.
    • The weapon skin reward will now change every week together with the Episodes.

  • Added Community Challenges: Time-limited challenges with a shared goal for all players.
  • Added the Royal Vengeance Heavy Weapons Skin Pack: Skin rewards for the Machine Gun MAG5, Payload Rifle BF25, and Heavy Assault Shotgun Taiga-12 for completing the Community Challenges.
  • Added the Knight Heavy Weapons Skin Pack: Skin rewards for the MGL Hailstorm MGL, RPG Launcher RPGL4, and Heavy Assault Shotgun Taiga-12 for completing Extinction Mode.
  • Added four new custom portrait frames: Red Light, Memento Mori, To the Top, and Virologist.
  • Added seven new mutators: Hot Stuff, Сluster Shells, Doppelganger, Fire-resistant, Acid Spit, Effective Defense, and Overprice.
  • Reworked three mutators: Epilogue, Sell-out, and Taxes.

Resolved Issues

  • Fixed several connection issues with starting full-party sessions.
  • Fixed an issue where the player would not receive Blue Coins in Extinction Mode if the skin reward was already obtained.
  • Removed the white stripe from under the minimap.
  • Fixed an issue with incorrect skin icons for the MAG5.
  • Fixed an issue with unlocking the "Waster" portrait frame.
  • Fixed localization for Defensive SMG "G-Force" perk in Japanese.
  • Fixed localization for Classic Bullpup Rifle "Scorpion Sting" and "Adrenaline" perks in Japanese.
