This charity has a special connection to World of Warcraft. Mats “Ibelin” Steen was a Norwegian World of Warcraft player with a fondness for foxes who passed away on November 18, 2014, from Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Though his disease prevented him from doing many things in the real world, he made incredibly close connections in Azeroth. Ibelin, Steen’s in-game avatar, can be seen alongside Reven – which means “the fox” in Norwegian – in the pack trailer, where both can be seen visiting the in-game memorial of the beloved gamer.
Fans can watch Steen’s story in The Remarkable Life of Ibelin, a new documentary on Netflix. Originally premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January, this award-winning film features testimony from his friends and family who share moving stories of Steen in the decade since his passing, as well as World of Warcraft animations recreating some of the most touching scenes of Ibelin’s life in Azeroth.
Players can visit Ibelin’s memorial in World Warcraft on an islet located at Crystal Lake in Elwynn Forest. The monument is a perfect replication of his real-life gravestone, even featuring the English translation of its inscription: “Deeply missed, never forgotten.” Fans who donate to CureDuchenne via the Reven Pack should be sure to bring their new pet to the memorial, as players have been holding vigils there to commemorate Ibelin's remarkable life.
