Summary

  • The Joyous Journeys buff offers a 50% xp boost for Cataclysm Classic players until the Hour of Twilight patch.
  • The buff is active by default, but it can be manually turned off/on by speaking to the innkeeper.
  • The buff is not available in other WoW versions.

World of Warcraft has brought back the Joyous Journeys – a blanket 50% experience boost for all Cataclysm Classic players to enjoy. This optional boon will be active on the World of Warcraft progression servers until Hour of Twilight, the final major patch of Cataclysm Classic.

Joyous Journeys is an experience buff World of Warcraft introduced ahead of Wrath of the Lich King Classic in 2022. Since then, Blizzard has brought this experience buff back to celebrate major content releases for the World of Warcraft Classic progression servers.

Now, the Joyous Journeys have returned to World of Warcraft: Cataclysm Classic once more. From now until the release of Hour of Twilight, the next and last major update of Cataclysm Classic, all characters in the throwback progression servers can benefit from a 50% experience boost from all sources, all the way to the maximum level of 85. The buff is active by default, but fans who wish to turn it off or back on for any reason can do so by speaking with any innkeeper in a capital city or Dalaran.

50% Experience Buff in WoW: Cataclysm Classic Until Hour of Twilight

This buff is only available in Cataclysm Classic – Classic Era, the 20th Anniversary Realms, and Season of Discovery do not get Joyous Journeys, though the latter has permanent experience increases of its own. Modern WoW characters are also exempt from this boost – but World of Warcraft’s ongoing Turbulent Timeways event offers a method for characters to get a 30% experience buff by completing Timewalking dungeons.

Blizzard has seemingly started a trend with the Joyous Journeys buff on the Classic progression servers. The experience boost has returned for about a month ahead of nearly every major Classic content update since the re-launch of Wrath of the Lich King. While there is no promise that it will do so ahead of every patch, fans shouldn’t be surprised if it returns once again leading into World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria Classic later this year.

The start date for this Joyous Journeys buff may also be a hint as to when Hour of Twilight itself will release. While the final Cataclysm Classic patch has not gotten a release date yet, the previous precedent of Joyous Journeys suggests it could be released in about a month. If so, players could see the End Time and other iconic WoW: Cataclysm dungeons on or around February 18 or 25, with the Dragon Soul raid opening shortly after. Fans can expect an official confirmation of the start date within the next few weeks.
