Summary

  • World of Warcraft players now have a better chance of obtaining the Headless Horseman's Mount in Patch 10.1.7.
  • Players will have increased odds with the first kill of the Headless Horseman per day.
  • Taking the Horseman's "curses" before starting the battle will further increase the odds of obtaining the mount.

World of Warcraft players that have been after the Headless Horseman's Mount now have a better chance of obtaining it after Blizzard increased the odds of it dropping in Patch 10.1.7, Fury Incarnate. However, Blizzard stated that World of Warcraft players will only have increased odds with the first kill of the Headless Horseman per day, and the odds will go up if players take the Horseman's "curses" before starting the battle.

Known as Sir Thomas Thomson, the Headless Horseman is one of the most iconic recurring villains in World of Warcraft. As a former Scarlet Crusader in life, Thomson's soul was cursed into becoming the Headless Horseman in death, with the belief that he is alive and everyone else is undead. Though defeating the Headless Horseman grants players special gear such as rings, a sword, and the Horseman's helmet, the prize many World of Warcraft players sought after are The Horseman's Reins. This item granted players the Headless Horseman's Mount, one of the best mounts obtainable in World of Warcraft.

World of Warcraft Fan Shows Off Nostalgic Collectibles They've Had for 14 Years

World of Warcraft players that are bold enough to face the Headless Horseman found out that the encounter is not the same as previous years. When Patch 10.1.7 was available on the public test realm (PTR) in July 2023, some dataminers discovered that the battle with the Headless Horseman was getting a makeover, including a special "hard mode" that could be unlocked by WoW players. At the time of writing, this new challenge can be accessed by interacting with any of the wickerman statues located immediately to the left as players spawn into the Headless Horseman's battle instance. By interacting with the big wickerman in the middle, players can accept the Horseman's curses that will add additional area-of-effect (AoE) spells to dodge and more minions to kill during the fight.

Blizzard community manager Kaivax posted that World of Warcraft players who overcome these curses on their first kill of the day will have increased odds of obtaining the Headless Horseman's Mount via the Loot-Filled Pumpkin that players receive upon victory. While it is not known how much of an increase these odds are, this logic falls in line with a similar buff to the X-45 Heartbreaker mount during the annual Love Is In The Air holiday.

The buff to the Headless Horseman's Mount arrives as Blizzard prepares for the November 7 launch of the Guardians of the Dream content update. Though the drop rate for the Horseman's Reins is still low, it remains to be seen how many World of Warcraft players will see their long hunt for the mount come to an end.

World of Warcraft is available now for PC.
