A newly released Wuchang: Fallen Feathers mod allows players to roll back the controversial update 1.5. As such, the add-on serves as a timely and no-nonsense response to the recently implemented Wuchang: Fallen Feathers censorship.

Developer Leenzee Games released the latest Wuchang: Fallen Feathers update on August 12. Identified by version number 1.5, it introduced sweeping gameplay and narrative changes that quickly divided the player base. Most notably, certain NPCs and bosses were made immortal, preventing them from dying even after defeating them. Rather than perishing, a defeated unkillable character will become "exhausted," delivering new lines of dialogue that shift the tone of the story somewhat. Immortality bestowed by the 1.5 patch was reserved for historically important figures, such as Emperor Chongzhen and Liu Wenxiu. The move has sparked significant fan backlash, largely driven by the perception that the developer caved in to a small minority of Chinese players upset about the game's brand of historical fiction.

Wuchang: Fallen Feathers Gets Anti-Censorship Mod

With the barrage of fan complaints still ongoing, one tech-savvy player has now decided to take matters into their own hands and yank the censorship out of the game. This is now possible using the "Rollback censorship patch" add-on by Nexus Mods user DarkmoonBlade, which materialized less than three days after the controversial patch was rolled out. The mod has already been downloaded hundreds of times, underscoring how widespread dissatisfaction with the 1.5 update has become. In comments accompanying the release, DarkmoonBlade criticized the August patch, positing it has "ruined the game's story and immersion" by replacing pivotal deaths with inconsequential dialogue.

How To Roll Back Wuchang: Fallen Feathers Censorship Update

  1. Extract the 7z archive into the game’s root folder which defaults to SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Wuchang Fallen Feathers (same directory as Project_Plague.exe)
  2. Run WuchangRollback.exe > wait for "rollback complete" message
  3. Disable Steam auto-update under Library > Wuchang > Properties > Updates > “Wait until I launch the game”
  4. Launch the game via Project_Plage\Binaries\Win64\Project_Plague-Win64-Shipping.exe

The mod won't work if the game is launched via Steam or Project_Plague.exe; it must be started via the game's main EXE.

Leenzee Games has yet to address the backlash or comment on why such sweeping changes were introduced. In the absence of official communication, speculation continues that the alterations were motivated by cultural sensitivities, particularly regarding depictions of historical Chinese figures doubling as Wuchang: Fallen Feathers bosses. The developer has so far only committed to further adjustments to the newly added exhaustion animations, citing the vague goal of improving "plot performance." Given the current state of affairs, the likelihood of Leenzee itself rolling back the controversial patch appears slim.

For now, DarkmoonBlade's rollback tool remains the only way for players to experience Wuchang: Fallen Feathers the way it was originally envisioned. As tends to be the case with user-made modifications, the mod is exclusively compatible with the PC version of the recently released soulslike.
