Developer Leenzee has rolled out a new update for Wuchang: Fallen Feathers on both PC and console, with the patch bringing a multitude of performance enhancements and bug fixes to the Soulslike title. While the game has largely been a hit with players, recent decisions made by its studio have prompted backlash, though many hope to see Wuchang: Fallen Feathers survive and thrive following this ongoing controversy.
Hours after its launch, Wuchang: Fallen Feathers pulled in over 100,000 concurrent players on Steam, wowing players with its combat, level design, skill tree, and incredibly difficult boss fights. The title's addition as a day one release on Xbox Game Pass in July also bolstered its fanbase and helped get Wuchang: Fallen Feathers into the hands of even more players. Unfortunately, a major update released on August 12 has prompted boycotts and review bombing campaigns, with the developer making several unpopular gameplay changes and even altering the title's narrative. Many believe that this perceived censorship was intended to cater to a few Chinese fans unhappy with the title's take on historical fiction.
Wuchang: Fallen Feathers' New Game Plus Mode Breaks a Major Soulslike Tradition
Wuchang: Fallen Feathers breaks Soulslike tradition with a New Game Plus that trades punishment for power and flips the usual cycle on its head.
Hot on the heels of Wuchang: Fallen Feathers' controversial update, Leenzee has rolled out a new and much smaller patch for all players. The game has been criticized for its poor performance on PC, and this new update promises some much-needed improvements, with a new "Nvidia Reflex Low Latency" option being added to the settings menu. While the results of this addition will depend on the player's hardware, it will potentially improve performance and stability. For console players, an issue preventing players from unlocking achievements has been remedied, along with an issue with PS5 controller inputs. The studio hasn't made any comment regarding its recent changes to Wuchang: Fallen Feathers' story and gameplay.
Following the release of the unpopular 1.5 patch, one dedicated player released a Wuchang: Fallen Feathers mod to roll back the recent changes made by Leenzee. These changes included making some NPCs and bosses immortal and replacing death sequences with new dialogue that many feel diminishes the title's once-powerful narrative. Many players have noted that while they enjoy the game, the lack of transparency regarding these changes has made them feel "betrayed."
After facing backlash due to Wuchang: Fallen Feathers' poor PC performance, Leenzee began compensating impacted players. Those who purchased the Standard Edition can snag the game's soundtrack for free, along with three pieces of in-game headgear. Players who shelled out more for the Deluxe Edition will receive three premium costumes and four new weapons, along with an additional free outfit.
