Wuchang: Fallen Feathers has received its first big update for July 2025. Identified by version number 1.3, this release rebalances one part of the game that frustrated some players and addresses a number of early fan complaints about Wuchang: Fallen Feathers performance issues, among other novelties.

A soulslike RPG from Chinese developer Leenzee, Wuchang: Fallen Feathers was released for PC and consoles this Thursday, July 24. While the game was met with mostly favorable reviews, as underlined by its 75 average score on OpenCritic, it has also received substantial criticism for performance issues, particularly on PC.

Technical issues in Wuchang: Fallen Feathers motivate the modding community to deliver unofficial fixes to improve performance on PC.

Some of those complaints are seemingly addressed by the 1.3 update, which rolled out on July 24, mere hours following the game's debut. Among its changes is a readjustment of the resolution limits imposed on supersampling, an anti-aliasing technique for smoothening jagged edges that first renders an image at a higher internal resolution, then downsamples the result before outputting it to a display. This, in general, improves visual clarity, but is taxing on hardware. Leenzee opted to lower the limits "on select GPUs" in an attempt to avoid Wuchang: Fallen Feathers performance drops stemming from supersampling.

Wuchang: Fallen Feathers Nerfs Frustrating Encounter

The 1.3 update also rebalances a Chapter 2 encounter in which players navigate a deadly field. Without venturing into spoilers, a vocal segment of early adopters criticized Wuchang: Fallen Feathers for this set piece, calling it frustrating and unenjoyable. Detailed information about the encounter and its nerf (which spoils its premise for those who haven't yet reached Chapter 2) is available in the official changelog attached to the patch.

New Wuchang Update Includes PC Performance Improvements

The update introduces some PC-specific tweaks, like disabling the Low Latency Mode by default and adding optimizations for lower-end GPUs. Specifically, cards with under 8GB VRAM will now leverage additional memory-saving techniques that will reduce texture quality but should help with performance. Players who are experiencing issues with more powerful hardware can still enable these new optimizations by setting the texture quality to Low. With Leenzee linking crashes and stuttering to insufficient video RAM, the studio expects that these changes will reduce both.

Wuchang Is Giving Free DLC as Compensation for Launch Issues

As an apology for the game's launch issues, Leenzee will be giving away the Wuchang: Fallen Feathers Original Soundtrack DLC to early adopters across all platforms, with the developer saying as much in its July 24 patch notes. Those playing the ARPG via Xbox Game Pass or PC Game Pass presumably won't qualify for the complimentary pack. Wuchang: Fallen Feathers' Steam user reviews are still "Overwhelmingly Negative" on account of its performance issues, as well as some minor complaints about the soulslike RPG's difficulty.

Wuchang: Fallen Feathers Update 1.3 Patch Notes

The third and final section of the 1.3 patch notes—"Gameplay Balance Adjustments"—contains a gameplay spoiler that reveals the premise of one Wuchang: Fallen Feathers Chapter 2 encounter.

  • Performance-Related Optimizations
    • Low Latency Mode is now a manual toggle in the Options menu. It will no longer be enabled by default.
    • Supersampling resolution limits have been adjusted on select GPU models to prevent unintended performance degradation.
    • VRAM optimization for lower-end GPUs:
    • For GPUs with 8GB or less VRAM, memory-saving optimization is now applied across all texture quality levels.
    • For GPUs with more than 8GB VRAM, this optimization applies only when texture quality is set to Low.
    • These changes improve stability and reduce crashes or stuttering caused by insufficient video memory.
  • Bug Fixes and Stability Improvements
    • Fixed a crash that could occur immediately after the company logo during game startup.
    • Resolved execution stutter affecting select hardware configurations during finisher animations.
    • Fixed issues related to both the Standard Edition and Deluxe Edition – after the patch update, players of both versions will receive the correct content rewards. Players who have already purchased the Deluxe Edition package will need to log in again and claim the reward at the donation box located in Reverent Temple.
    • All WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers Steam owners will receive the Original Soundtrack DLC for free as compensation.
  • Gameplay Balance Adjustments
    • Chapter 2 – Landmine Encounter Rebalancing:
    • Reduced the number of landmines and adjusted their damage output to create a more fair and enjoyable challenge.
