Director Ryan Coogler has given an update on the eagerly-awaited X-Files reboot, which will aim to bring the iconic and classic 1990s science-fiction TV series back to the small screen after seven years since the revival ended. Along with Gillian Anderson as FBI Agent and medical doctor Dana Scully and David Duchovny as FBI agent Fox Mulder, The X-Files hit TVs in 1993, which follows Scully and Mulder as the pair take a deep dive into weird and unusual cases that seemingly have no logical answers in a bid to get to the truth.

The X-Files quickly accumulated a massive fandom due to its fascinating storylines and the show's ability to tap into the cultural anxieties of the time, especially around government conspiracies. Even three decades later, its fanbase remains as strong as ever because of its relevant hard-hitting themes. Of course, audiences were completely invested in seeing how Scully and Mulder's will-they-or-won't-they relationship panned out, too, with their once platonic partnership eventually blossoming into a romantic relationship that became fully realized in Season 7 of The X-Files. Now, as more discussions heat up about its reboot, Black Panther director Ryan Coogler gives sci-fi lovers an update on the series, as well as Gillian Anderson's potential return.

Ryan Coogler Offers Exciting Update on X-Files Reboot Status

Talking in an interview on Last Podcast On The Left about the upcoming supernatural horror film Sinners, which Coogler wrote, produced, and directed, he also disclosed that he will be working on The X-Files reboot straight after Sinners is released in April this year. The Black Panther director and Oscar nominee was asked which project he would be involved with next, with Coogler stating that he will begin development on the reboot “immediately next.” Coogler also adds that he really hopes the new X-Files episodes will be “f**king scary”, that's if he and the team nail the right atmosphere and script.

"I’m working on X-Files. That’s what’s immediately next. So, I’ve been excited about that for a long time, and I’m fired up to get back to it, and that, you know, some of those episodes, if we do our jobs right, will be really f—king scary."

The question everyone wants to know about an X-Files reboot is, will Gillian Anderson's iconic Scully make her way back into the series? Although Coogler doesn't dive into any specifics, he does state that he has talked with the two-time Golden Globe winning actress and said that he's looking forward to seeing Anderson in the upcoming movie Tron: Ares. Coogler didn't reveal whether Anderson was interested in coming back or not, but he seemed pretty excited and positive about his conversation with her, as well as wanting the X-Files reboot to bring in "new fans."

"I’ve spoken to the great Gillian. She’s incredible. Fingers crossed there. I can’t wait to see her. She’s in Tron. I just saw a trailer for that. When I spoke to her, she was finishing that up. But, yeah, but we’re gonna try to make something really… we’re gonna try to make something really great, bro, and really, really be, you know, something for the real X-Files fans, you know what I’m saying? And, maybe, find some new ones."

Due to Coogler's other projects, like directing the Black Panther film series, Creed, a Rocky spin-off, and Fruitvale Station, the 38-year-old is more than equipped to bring his experience and skills to an X-Files reboot and turn it into something really special, while also amassing a completely new fandom that weren't around for the show's massive cultural impact in the 90s. The only thing now to wonder is if Scully and Mulder will also join the reboot, but hopefully, more news about that and a potential release window is in the near future.
