Intrepid World of Warcraft players may have a chance to purchase Avowed, an upcoming RPG from the developers of Fallout: New Vegas, using only their in-game gold. On consoles, Avowed is exclusive to the Xbox Series X and S, but is also available on PC through various storefronts.
Though it didn't originate the practice , World of Warcraft might be one of the best-known examples of players being able to use their in-game resources to purchase things outside the game. This is done via WoW Tokens, an item purchasable with real money that can be redeemed for credit on Blizzard's Battle.net storefront. WoW Tokens can be sold in World of Warcraft's in-game auction house, thus allowing players with large stockpiles of in-game cash to trade it for credit that can then be used to buy things on Battle.net.
Avowed Fans Will Have the Chance to Play the Game Early

Some of those things include other, non-Blizzard games, like Avowed, which will launch on PC via a variety of storefronts, including Steam, the Epic Games Store, and Battle.net. As pointed out by an article in IGN, Avowed's presence on Battle.net makes it a potential target for purchases by World of Warcraft moneymakers, who could trade their in-game gold for WoW Tokens, then redeem the tokens for enough Battle.net credit to buy the game when it launches on February 18, 2025.
Buying Avowed with WoW Currency Could Cost 1.3 Million Gold
Given the $69.99 USD price of Avowed's standard edition, a minimum of 5 WoW Tokens (which can be redeemed for $15 USD in Battle.net credit) are needed to cover the purchase. The price of a WoW Token in World of Warcraft gold can change drastically based on the region. According to an online World of Warcraft auction house tracker, the current price of a WoW Token runs from 260,201 gold on the US servers to 473,905 gold on the Taiwan servers. Thus, buying Avowed could cost anywhere between 1.3 million to 2.37 million gold, based on prices at time of writing. This figure also doesn't account for potential disruptions to overall WoW Token supply, like what happened when Blizzard released a premium World of Warcraft mount that caused a buying spree that depleted the auction house of tokens and drove prices sky-high.
In the end, funding a trip to the Living Lands in Avowed using only one's WoW gold stockpile could make for an interesting stunt, but is probably not the most economical use of one's time or money. After all, the PC edition of Avowed is also a day one Xbox Game Pass release, so someone with an existing Game Pass subscription can gain access to the game for "free" when it launches.
