Forza Horizon 5 is now the highest-selling game on PlayStation 5 in 2025, following its port to Sony's console in April. Hailed as one of the greatest racing games of all time and celebrated as one of the best games of its release year, the Mexico-set Forza Horizon 5 was initially released in 2021 and is tied with its predecessor, Forza Horizon 4, with the highest Metacritic score in its series, sitting at a 92.
It's become clear over the past year that Xbox is no longer interested in keeping some of its biggest first-party games exclusive to its own ecosystem. Following a "testing of the waters" last year bringing smaller games like Grounded, Sea of Thieves, and Hi-Fi Rush to Nintendo Switch and PS5, Xbox went bigger in 2025, making its first-party hit Indiana Jones and the Great Circle available on PS5 just four months after its initial December 2024 release. Xbox also put the latest entry in one of its "big three" franchises, the critically acclaimed Forza Horizon 5, on PS5 as well, and the game has seen a surge of popularity on the platform, becoming one of the best-selling games on PS5 this year.
Xbox-Owned Forza Horizon 5 Gets Big Boost on PS5 Pro
A new tech analysis of Forza Horizon 5 on PS5 Pro reveals major upgrades that cement the Sony system as the best way to play the game on console.
Now, Forza Horizon 5 has shifted up a gear, surpassing Capcom's Monster Hunter Wilds as the top-selling PS5 game so far this year, having sold a total of three million units on the platform. Other games near the top are Assassin's Creed Shadows in the third spot, followed by Elden Ring Nightreign and indie masterpiece Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Sony's own Death Stranding 2 was released just last month, and considering the near unanimous praise it's received, it's surprising to not see it in the mix.
Forza Horizon 5 is the PS5's Best-Selling Game So Far This Year
Despite how well Forza Horizon 5 is doing on PS5, it's hard to imagine the game holding on to its top spot for the rest of the year. There's still a lot of 2025 left with several high-profile games yet to release. Sucker Punch's sequel Ghost of Yotei is set for an October release and might have the potential to make a run at number one. There are also regulars like Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, EA Sports FC 26, and College Football 26 that can easily hog up some of the top spots on PS5's best-selling list by the end of the year. Aforementioned games like Monster Hunter Wilds and AC Shadows have likely hit their sales ceilings for the year, though Game Awards nominations could give them a small boost, which is especially true for Clair Obscur, one of the clear GOTY favorites.
The party isn't over for Xbox first-party games on PS5 this year, as Gears of War: Reloaded, a remaster of the 2006 original, is launching day one on PS5 next month. The same is true for Obsidian's third game release of 2025, The Outer Worlds 2, in October. In the meantime, PS5 gamers who have yet to try out Forza Horizon 5 can take advantage of a 25% discount as part of PlayStation's Summer Sale.
