Microsoft's subscription service normally rotates out games twice a month. Last month was a bit of a deviation from that norm, as it saw the XGP library shrink on three separate occasions; aside from the regular mid-month and month-end Xbox Game Pass departures, the service also lost Cricket 22 on July 5.
Xbox Game Pass Adds Day-One Open-World Game
The first August 2024 addition to Xbox Game Pass is a day-one open-world title that's been getting great reviews in recent days.
Microsoft now appears to be returning to its regular rotation schedule, whose next stop is to remove Airborne Kingdom, Offworld Trading Company, Shadow Warrior 3: Definitive Edition, and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. All of these titles are leaving Xbox Game Pass later today. When exactly the August 15 departures will be removed from the XGP library is unclear, as Microsoft never announces specific departure times in advance. That's still not enough time to comfortably beat any single one of these soon-to-be-departing titles. Nevertheless, those who have the entire afternoon free might still be able to complete one of them, as Shadow Warrior 3: Definitive Edition takes roughly five and a half hours to beat. But grabbing all of its 38 achievements with a combined worth of 1,000 Gamerscore points is a much more time-consuming affair that's estimated to take almost twice as long. A single campaign in Airborne Kingdom, The Wandering Band's 2022 city builder, is also somewhat doable in half a day, according to HowLongToBeat data.
Since Xbox Game Pass added only four titles in the first half of August 2024, today's departures will effectively offset those gains, leaving the service with no net content increase in the past two weeks. Microsoft has yet to reveal the second wave of its August 2024 Xbox Game Pass lineup, so it remains to be seen what the situation will look like by the end of the month. The next batch of departures, which will likely leave the service on August 31, is expected to be announced alongside the new releases for the second half of the month.
Based on previous third-party publisher announcements, the second wave of August 2024 XGP additions will include Core Keeper and SOPA: Tale of the Stolen Potato, both of which have previously been confirmed as day-one releases on Microsoft's service. And while Core Keeper is scheduled to launch on August 27, SOPA is still waiting for a release date.
