Summary
- Xbox Expansion Card is expensive, costing more than a Nintendo Switch 2.
- Expansion Cards can provide extra storage for Xbox Series X, similar to memory cards.
- If $499.99 is too steep, consider the more affordable 2TB or 1TB options.
A new Xbox storage Expansion Card can add a ton of space to a gamer's console, but it's so expensive that players would spend less money buying a brand-new Nintendo Switch 2. While the price might be worth it to some Xbox fans, it's easy to imagine many balking at the tremendous cost.
Xbox owners have a variety of ways of ensuring they have enough space to play the games that they want. Choosing an Xbox Series X console with a larger drive to begin with is a start, but gamers can also upgrade their Xbox storage with an external hard drive or an Expansion Card. Expansion Cards slot in similarly to old-fashioned PlayStation memory cards, as they can simply be put into an Xbox and removed and swapped out as needed.

These Expansion Cards can get fairly pricey, but nothing's been as expensive as the new 4TB Xbox Expansion Card from Seagate. As spotted by WindowsCentral, when the item first appeared on Best Buy's website, it was listed at an incredible price of $499.99. That's roughly $50 more than the price of a base Nintendo Switch 2 system, or the same price as getting the new console bundled with Mario Kart World. While gamers would likely appreciate having the extra storage space, the cost may simply be too much for some to consider seriously. The Expansion Card listing has since disappeared from Best Buy's website, with no further explanation. It's possible that it was listed too soon, or that stock wasn't available when the retailer expected it to be.
Gaming Costs Can Add Up Quickly
As gamers continue to feel frustration over the increasing cost of game prices and higher-than-expected costs for certain game systems, those aren't the only concerns surrounding the increasing expense of gaming. Having enough storage is extremely important as games continue to balloon in file size. For example, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and Modern Warfare 3 both needed over 100GB of hard drive space to play. For those who play a lot of modern games, it's easy to fill up the storage on a console.
With that said, while the price is high, it's not out of line with the existing Seagate series of Xbox Expansion Cards. The 2TB version, half the storage space, is also around half the price, with an MSRP of $250, and a current listing on Best Buy of $219.99. For those who can't afford or don't need a full 4TB of space, the 2TB or 1TB options may be a better choice.
