Summary

  • XDefiant will officially shut down today, June 3.
  • Servers will be taken offline permanently at some point today.
  • Refunds for any DLC purchases made from November 3 onwards should have already been issued.

Today, June 3, will be a sad day for XDefiant fans, as Ubisoft will be permanently shutting down the game's servers. After a handful of successful beta tests throughout 2023, Ubisoft finally launched XDefiant in May 2024. Despite some initial problems with its net code, some fans quickly dubbed it the "Call of Duty killer." However, in December 2024, Ubisoft shocked players and announced that it would be sunsetting XDefiant.

In June 2024, just one month after the game's launch, XDefiant broke an incredible record, becoming Ubisoft's fastest title to reach a million unique players. According to CEO Yves Guillemot, XDefiant attracted 11 million players in its first month, and the studio expected the title to continue growing with the launch of Season 1. Unfortunately, despite the massively successful launch, rumors began circulating in August 2024 that the game's future was in doubt as its player count began to spiral. XDefiant's executive producer, Mark Rubin, repeatedly denied these claims, but it seemed there was truth to the rumors, as it was announced in December 2024 that the shooter would be shut down in June 2025.

XDefiant's Assassin's Creed Faction May Be Too Little Too Late

Ubisoft recently added an Assassin's Creed faction to its ill-fated FPS XDefiant, but it arguably came out far too late to make a noticeable impact.

XDefiant Servers Will Shut Down Today

It has officially been six months since Ubisoft announced that XDefiant would be shutting down, which means the day fans have been dreading is finally upon them. Today, June 3, officially marks the end of XDefiant, as Ubisoft will be shutting down the game at some point today. The exact time at which the servers will go offline has not been confirmed, so fans still eager to play should jump in while they still can. While some titles have been known to implement an offline mode to allow players to continue playing, Ubisoft confirmed in its initial announcement that the game will be completely unplayable from June 3, 2025. The good news, however, is that all DLC purchases made on November 3, 2024, should have been automatically refunded by now.

Despite its impending shutdown, Ubisoft still released the massive Season 3 update for XDefiant. The last major content update for the shooter brought a plethora of new modes, factions, gameplay adjustments, bug fixes, and more. While Ubisoft initially had plans for the game to receive a fourth season, the studio chose to release two seasons' worth of content in one update. The patch saw three new factions added to the game, one of which was inspired by Assassin's Creed, and another inspired by the popular Far Cry 3 expansion, Blood Dragon. There were also thirteen new maps for players to check out, as nine of them were planned for future seasons.

Although other Ubisoft titles, such as Assassin's Creed Shadows and Rainbow Six Siege, continue to perform exceptionally well for the studio, Ubisoft has reported massive losses for the fiscal year 2024-2025. The studio showcased a staggering loss of €159 million for the year, likely due to disappointments such as Star Wars Outlaws and XDefiant. However, there is still plenty for Ubisoft fans to look forward to, as rumors continue circulating on another entry in The Crew series and a highly requested remake of Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag.
