Foggy Dilemma is an Affinity Mission in Xenoblade Chronicles X that becomes available after completing Chapter 4. While this mission is not extremely difficult to complete, some players may be confused about how to start it. This guide will attempt to alleviate that confusion, and it explains how to initiate and address the Foggy Dilemma mission in Xenoblade Chronicles X.
The preliminary waypoint for Foggy Dilemma appears in NLA's Residential District, and, indeed, that is where players will ultimately start the mission.

Xenoblade Chronicles X: How to Start Foggy Dilemma
Before players can start the Foggy Dilemma mission, they must fulfill several prerequisites. The first of those prerequisites are completing the Chapter 4 Story Mission and reaching Level 13 with Xenoblade Chronicles X's protagonist. While the ways in which those two prerequisites are fulfilled are quite straightforward, there is a third prerequisite that may give players some trouble.
Specifically, players need to accept the Backup Request basic mission from the Mission Control console in NLA. For the sake of full clarity, the precise position of that console has been marked on the following maps, and players should scroll through the available missions until they find Phog's Backup Request mission and accept it.
To note, Phog's Backup Request mission does not always seem to be available through the Mission Control console. Fortunately, Xenoblade Chronicles X players can quickly refresh the list of basic missions by closing the Mission Control menu and then opening it again by interacting with the console, and they should repeat those actions until Backup Request appears.
If a player still does not see Backup Request after refreshing the Mission Control console several times, it may be because they have accepted a basic mission that prevents it from appearing. As such, players may need to spend some time completing their basic missions, or abandoning them, before Phog's request becomes available.
After accepting Phog's Backup Request mission from the Mission Control console, a waypoint for the mission will appear in NLA's Residential District (on top of the waypoint for the Foggy Dilemma mission). Players should now travel to that waypoint and interact with it to accept the Foggy Dilemma affinity mission in Xenoblade Chronicles X and complete Backup Request.

Investigate the Data Probes
The Foggy Dilemma mission begins with adding Phog to the active party and traveling to Oblivia to investigate some Data Probes, and the locations that players must visit will always be marked with an orange diamond on the in-game map. The first of those diamonds will appear on the west side of Oblivia, and players should take these actions when they find it on the map:
- Highlight the waypoint on the map and track it.
- Use Xenoblade Chronicles X' s fast travel feature to get as close as possible to the waypoint.
- Deploy the Follow Ball (by pressing R + X) upon arrival, and follow the trail that it creates to reach the first Data Probe.
- Repeat these steps to investigate the second, third, and fourth Data Probes.
Defeat the Qmoeva Divider, Marnuck Crafter, and Marnuck Analysts
Upon arriving at the fourth Data Probe, players will initiate a fight with several Level 12–14 enemies. This is a fairly easy battle in Xenoblade Chronicles X, and dispatching those foes marks the end of the Foggy Dilemma mission. This does not need to be the end of a player's time with Phog, though, as he will be available as a possible party member moving forward.
