Summary

  • Fans hope for Yellowjackets season 4; some viewers want a redemption arc for Shauna.
  • Shauna's character evolution may need to show vulnerability for more depth.
  • Melanie Lynskey hints at a confident Shauna in season 4, adding to shocking twists.

Fans remain hopeful Yellowjackets season 4 will happen, and while some hope the supernatural part of the series remains vague and mysterious, others are focusing on one particular character arc. The Showtime drama premiered in 2021 with a shocking and haunting pilot episode sharing the story of a girls' soccer team whose plane crashes in the woods. Since then, there have been tragic deaths, upsetting betrayals, and two fascinating timelines.

While Yellowjackets isn't a corny show with happy endings and it's hard to imagine the characters ever being in a good place after their trauma, some viewers wonder if one character could be redeemed.

Yellowjackets Season 4 Should Redeem Shauna, According To Some Fans

Shauna (Melanie Lynskey) on Yellowjackets

Redditor @No_Two_1627 asked if Shauna Sadecki (played by Sophie Nélisse and Melanie Lynskey) will experience character growth in Yellowjackets season 4 and wrote:

"will the writers try to course-correct in season 4? Not a full redemption arc, but maybe something that at least makes her bearable again. More introspection, more vulnerability, a reminder of who she used to be before all this rot set in. Because right now, she’s not just morally gray—she’s actively destructive."

The fan continued that Yellowjackets could "lose its emotional center" if Shauna doesn't become likable, and that's a great point. When comparing the Showtime series to others with similar tones, there are usually more people to root for. However, in this case, while fans hope that the girls are rescued and are eager to see that timeline in Yellowjackets season 4, it's hard to agree with any of their choices or think they're good people.

While some viewers think Shauna should change and Redditor @Whatisgoingonheur said Shauna shouldn't "get to a place where most people can't stand her," others are fine with her being a terrible person. However, Redditor @murnaukmoth suggests a middle ground for Shauna's character arc:

"I hope they don't make Shauna more palatable by having her make more sensible choices or become a better person but it might be a good idea to show her vulnerability again so that her portrayal seems less one-sided."

The best Yellowjackets episodes have twists no one unexpected and prove that no matter how well viewers think they know these characters, there are always shocking reveals waiting. Between stealing her best friend Jackie's (Ella Purnell) boyfriend Jeff (Warren Kole) and killing Adam (Adam Miller), Shauna has been cruel and violent, and unapologetic. It's hard not to wish for at least one moment in Yellowjackets season 4 where Shauna is remorseful and tries to learn from her mistakes and become a better person. While it would be unrealistic for her to change overnight, some fans would appreciate seeing some compassion from Shauna.

Although it's hard to support characters who engage in cannibalism, it would be great to focus on Shauna next season and see her grow. Otherwise, the show might feel like too much of the same.

Melanie Lynskey Talked About Shauna's Evolution From Yellowjackets Season 1 Through 3

Shauna (Melanie Lynskey) on Yellowjackets

In an interview with Variety, Melanie Lynskey shared that she and Sophie Nélisse have the same approach to Shauna's unique and compelling personality. Lynskey said:

"We both felt like Shauna was wearing a costume when the show began — in the teen timeline and the adult timeline. That she was very aware of her own power in every way. She was not a wallflower."

Lynskey continued that teenage Shauna pretended to be shy because:

"she was actually quite scared of allowing herself to embrace her full power."

If Yellowjackets season 4 happens, then Shauna will likely become even more confident and terrifying. But, as fans have seen since the season 2 premiere which set up adult Lottie (Simone Kessell) being a cult leader, the series is full of big surprises at every turn, and no one can fully guess what's up next.
