Summary

  • Yoshida aims to bring FF14 to Nintendo consoles eventually.
  • FF14 has seen success since launch, with multiple expansions.
  • The game is already on PlayStation and Xbox.

Final Fantasy 14 lead producer and director Naoki Yoshida acknowledged the possibility of bringing the game to Nintendo's systems, saying it is a "goal" the developers are working towards. Final Fantasy 14 is continuing to see plenty of success in 2024 after it's initial launch 11 years ago. The game has seen numerous revamps and story expansions in the past decade, with the fifth one, Final Fantasy 14: Dawntrail, launching earlier this past July.

Final Fantasy 14 has also been brought onto a variety of platforms since its original launch, being ported to both the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 consoles. Final Fantasy 14's Xbox Series X/S versions launched earlier this March, following some big delays and challenges, which gave Xbox fans the chance to play the game for the first time. Some fans also believe that Final Fantasy 14 could be a good game on the Nintendo Switch or its successor console, and it appears that some of the developers are at least discussing the idea of bringing the critically acclaimed MMORPG to Nintendo's hardware.

Interview: Final Fantasy 14's Yoshi-P Reflects on Dawntrail, Teases Upcoming Content

In a The Best War Games interview, Yoshi-P talked about everything from login queues to his biggest points of pride for Final Fantasy 14: Dawntrail.

In an interview with Gamereactor from this year's Gamescom, Yoshida was asked about various developments his team had to face recently, such as the challenges of bringing Final Fantasy 14 to Xbox Series consoles and porting Final Fantasy 16 to PC. Yoshida was also asked about any future platforms that the team is looking to bring Final Fantasy 14 to, with Yoshida responding that they are suspecting that their players really want to have the game on Nintendo's consoles, but the concept first in foremost is to release on as many consoles as possible. Yoshida also added that the team is making progress in bringing the game to Nintendo's consoles and to look forward to it.

Final Fantasy 14 Reportedly in Talks for Switch 2

Since Final Fantasy 14 is a visually and technically demanding game, it seems unlikely that it will release on current Nintendo Switch hardware. However, Nintendo is already working on a Switch successor console, which will seemingly be released sometime after March 2025. Based on various reports and rumors about the hardware, it is seemingly pretty powerful, and various publishers and developers have reportedly gotten a chance to try it out.

This isn't the first time Yoshida was asked about bringing Final Fantasy 14 to the Switch 2, as he was open to the possibility of bringing the game to the system. As such, it's quite possible that Yoshida is alluding to bringing FF14 for Nintendo's future system, though this is speculation for now. Yoshida also expressed his thanks to all the players who had waited a long time for FF14 to launch on the Xbox Series X/S consoles, grateful for the response they got.
