- "Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man" marks a new approach for Marvel Studios' animated shows.
Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man hasn’t even dropped yet, and the show’s future is looking good already as a Marvel exec gives fans an idea of the company’s future plans for the ambitious new animated series.
Spider-Man is the definition of a marquee character and has seen representation in almost every medium available as a result. With the massive success of the MCU starting up without the rights to the characters being held by Marvel Studios, Tom Holland’s introduction to the franchise has been a pretty one-note affair in terms of his character’s place within the franchise. The main feature of Holland’s MCU tenure has been his relationship with Iron Man and Tony Stark, who served as his mentor and even played a short but prominent role in Holland’s own Home solo films. Elsewhere, the character is bombarded with other heroes, including other Spider-Men. As such, fans were a bit relieved when the studio revealed Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man with a promise of giving a new spin on classic faces, including a new, unexpected mentor dynamic.
Benedict Cumberbatch's Avengers: Doomsday Comments Paint A Worrying Picture
Benedict Cumberbatch's latest interview gives a worrying insight into Avengers: Doomsday.
It’s clear from its premise that Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man finally gives Peter Parker something he needs by insulating him from other heroes’ overt influence, and it seems that the execution has won the company over. In a recent interview on The Movie Podcast, Marvel Studios production and development executive Brad Winderbaum discussed the show’s future, and didn’t hold back on just how much confidence the company has in the as of yet unreleased show. "I've fallen so head over heels in love with these characters. I've now read all the scripts for Season 2, we’re halfway through the animatics,” Winderbaum confirmed. “What Jeff [Trammell] is building brick by brick in this show starts to pay off. You feel it in Season 1, you grow connected to these characters so that when everything’s supposed to lock into place and pay off by the end of the season…I don’t know about you guys, but I feel it really in my soul, and it just gets deeper and deeper in subsequent seasons."
Despite the strong commendation and the confirmation of a second season already well underway, the good news doesn't stop there for Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, as Winderbaum . "We’re also greenlit for through Season 3, and in a couple [of] weeks, I’m gonna hear his pitch for the third season of the show, and I’m like a fan, I can't wait." This is great news for a plethora of reasons, not least because Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man’s creator has confirmed multiple great new debuts for the MCU and will likely only have more in store with three seasons guaranteed. While Loki, What If...?, X-Men '97, and Daredevil: Born Again were all renewed for a second season prior to their premiere, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man marks the first time a project has been renewed for a third season before any episodes air.
Being renewed for a second and a third season before the first episodes even hit Disney+ shows a level of conviction that Marvel Studios has been hesitant to give prior to this point, as well as a decision that's rare for Disney IP in general. With tons of fan favorites only seeing renewals one season at a time and tons of other, higher-budget surefire hits having to prove their worth on the streamer, it'll be interesting to see what's got everyone at the company feeling so confident. While the fact that Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man is no longer canon could be a bit of a bummer, there’s no reason why the show can’t still have a positive effect on the greater Marvel universe. New characters and new storylines could all be eased into the mainline franchise over time, and that would be a major boon to the MCU if handled correctly.
Marvel’s animated shows have a lot of potential if they can take a page from X-Men ‘97 and really bring something unique to the table. They could be a prominent bright spot for the franchise while the live-action films and TV shows take the long road in returning to their past glory. For now, fans can look forward to seeing what all the hype is about when the show debuts this month.
Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man will be available to stream on Disney+ starting 29 January 2025.
