It’s a wrap on Rebel Moon, Zack Snyder’s space opera that will debut on Netflix in 2023. In the wake of the Warner Bros controversy surrounding Zack Snyder and the production of Justice League, the director was given creative freedom at Netflix to make Army of the Dead, and now the upcoming Rebel Moon.
Rebel Moon was originally pitched as a Star Wars spinoff, but ended up becoming its own story with Netflix. The synopsis recounts a young woman seeking help from warriors to defend her colony from the tyrannical oppressors that came to conquer. However, as is the case with a Zack Snyder film, fans can expect Rebel Moon to stand out from the rest as something original, action-packed, and atmospheric, while exploring complex themes relevant to the present day. Based on reports, the creative freedom that Zack Snyder was given in the production may be evident to how Rebel Moon can succeed where his time with Warner Bros and the DC Universe was met with turmoil and creative differences.
Zack Snyder posted a cinematic clip from Rebel Moon showing a young woman in a meditative state, played by Bae Doona. Although the Korean actor’s role is unknown, it is speculated that it could be the character portrayed from the synopsis. In the post, Zack Snyder thanks everyone who worked on the film and describes his humble admiration for the Rebel Moon team, while stating that it is a wrap on principal photography. Little is known about the film outside the synopsis, stunning concept art, and Rebel Moon teases, like a makeup test video. Most of Zack Snyder’s teases are shots from his iPhone, which the director is known for using smartphone devices for incredible cinematography.
WIth principal photography wrapped, it shouldn’t be much longer before fans are treated to a teaser trailer of Rebel Moon, featuring Anthony Hopkins, Bae Doona, Sofia Boutella, Cary Elwes, and Djimon Hounsou. There is still a lot of mystery surrounding the film, which is part of the fun for fans, as audiences are excited to see another original story by the auteur director characterized by all the Zack Snyder idiosyncrasies that make his films unique.
It is reported by Netflix that Rebel Moon will be split into two movies, so certainly there is a lot to look forward to regarding Zack Snyder projects, such as more potential Netflix’s Army of the Dead spinoffs, and Rebel Moon, as well as the possibility of another film set in the DCU since Zack Snyder publicly celebrated Henry Cavill’s return to Superman by ending the video stating that he looks forward to working with him again in the future. One thing is for sure, Rebel Moon will be unlike anything that audiences have seen from the director thus far, but given his prior portfolio of work it seems to fit in his wheelhouse of expertise.
