- Despite the missing credit, Miyamoto continues to work on the Zelda franchise, including a live-action film.
The release of The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom marked the first time that longtime Nintendo executive Shigeru Miyamoto was not featured in the credits of a Zelda game. The discovery was shared on social media alongside a list of how many developers contributed to Echoes of Wisdom.
Miyamoto, 71, started working at Nintendo in 1977, just a few years after graduating with an industrial design degree. At the time, Nintendo sold novelty items and playing cards rather than the video games the company is known for today. After drawing inspiration from arcade games like Space Invaders, Miyamoto helped create Nintendo's first major arcade game, Donkey Kong. Following Donkey Kong's success, Miyamoto worked on other projects before becoming the General Manager of Nintendo's Entertainment Analysis and Development (EAD) division. Despite his tenure with Nintendo, Miyamoto has shared no signs of retiring anytime soon.
While Miyamoto has been credited in numerous Nintendo titles since the 1980s, Echoes of Wisdom is not one of them. According to a transcription by Mastodon user Maxnichols, Echoes of Wisdom is the first time Miyamoto, who helped create the Zelda franchise in 1986, is not listed in the game's credits. Maxnichols' transcription also stated that Miyamoto had taken a step back from leadership as far back as 2015. That was when Miyamoto and Genyo Takeda briefly acted as co-presidents of Nintendo following the passing of the company's former leader, Satoru Iwata. Miyamoto was named Nintendo's "Creative Fellow" shortly after, and Tatsumi Kimishima was chosen as the company's next president. The last two Nintendo games credited to Miyamoto were Tears of The Kingdom and Pikmin 4, as he was listed as the general producer for each title.
Shigeru Miyamoto Is Not Credited in Echoes of Wisdom
- Zelda series co-creator Shigeru Miyamoto is not in the credits for Echoes of Wisdom.
- This is the first time Miyamoto's name did not appear at the end of a Zelda game.
- Miyamoto's previous Zelda series contribution was 2023's Tears of the Kingdom.
- Miyamoto is producing the upcoming Zelda live-action film along with Sony Pictures.
As for Echoes of Wisdom, the transcription stated that 338 different developers were credited, and over half of them had never appeared in the credits of a Legend of Zelda game. Although Miyamoto was not involved with Echoes of Wisdom, his work on the franchise continues. Miyamoto's next confirmed project is a live-action film adaptation of The Legend of Zelda, where he is listed as a producer. The film is being developed by Nintendo and Sony Pictures, with no casting or release information listed at the time of writing.
Despite Miyamoto's absence from the game's credits, the mechanics and characters of Echoes of Wisdom are a satisfying blend for old and new fans alike. It remains to be seen when Miyamoto's next projects will step into the spotlight.
