If you visit the Gerudo Desert before Jabul Waters in Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, you'll likely run into patches of the desert that are obscured by sandstorms. The cause of these are minibosses called Lanmolas, a centipede monster that hides in the sand to ambush its prey. If you manage to defeat two of them, you can start the "Wild Sandstorms" side quest. These monsters aren't as fearsome as Echoes of Wisdom's rift bosses, but they can be frustrating to deal with if you don't know how to beat them.

Wild Sandstorms Walkthrough

Lanmola Location in Echoes of Wisdom

zelda echoes of wisdom wild sandstorm side quest

To unlock "Wild Sandstorms," you need to complete "A Rift in the Gerudo Desert" story quest and defeat the two Lanmolas in the Gerudo Desert. Once you've defeated both the red and green Lanmolas, warp to Gerudo Town. Enter through the left door next to the palace, and speak to the Gerudo soldier with the side quest marker over her head. You'll learn about a third Lanmola, which you'll need to defeat as well.

If you're not seeing the side quest marker, then that means you haven't defeated the red and green Lanmolas.

You can tell if you're near a Lanmola's nest by the sandstorm that obscures the minimap (bottom-right corner). Lanmolas can be identified by a small, pulsing hill of sand. When you approach them, the surrounding area will turn into quicksand and it'll fight you.

  • The red Lanmola can be found northeast of Gerudo Town.
  • The green Lanmola is to the northwest of the rightmost Waypoint stone in the Gerudo Desert.
  • The purple Lanmola, which only appears when you defeated the red and green Lanmolas, is near the area where you found the green Lanmola (northwest of the rightmost Waypoint).

How to Defeat Lanmola in Echoes of Wisdom

Since the Lanmola will turn the surrounding area into quicksand, it's recommended you buy the Gerudo Sandals. These are sold for 400 Rupees at the store in Gerudo Town. Wearing these will prevent Zelda from sinking in quicksand, but unfortunately, this effect does not extend to your summoned Echo. Thus, you're better off using Echoes that can fly, such as Crows or Peahats. If you're completing this side quest later in the game, then you may have Wizzrobe, another recommended Echo. If you have Level 3 Echoes, such as the Level 3 Darknut, then you can use them to attack, but just re-summon them when they sink.

The Lanmola has two methods of attacking:

  • Charging across the quicksand.
  • Throwing boulders from a sandpit.

You won't be able to damage the Lanmola unless you flip it on its back. To do this, use Tri's Bind ability to grab its tail, then pull it out of the ground. This will leave it vulnerable for a short period of time, giving you an opportunity to attack it in Swordfigher Mode or with an Echo. Repeat this strategy, avoid the boulders it chucks at you, and be sure Zelda doesn't sink into the sand.

Lanmolas are usually accompanied by Sand Piranhas and Arurodas. They serve as pests that attack both you and your Echoes, and can interrupt Tri's Bind if they hit Zelda. Your best bet is to get rid of them first if you're struggling to pull the Lanmola out.

Defeating the red and green Lanmolas will reward you with Rupees and Monster Stones. If you defeat the purple/final Lanmola, you'll get Rupees and a piece of heart. With all three Lanmolas defeated, it's time to return to Gerudo Town and report your success.

How to Use the Gold Sash

You'll find one of the Gerudo Warriors worn out from her training. Speak to her so they can confirm the disappearance of the sandstorms. Facette will then arrive and give Zelda the Gold Sash Accessory as a reward. When equipped, Zelda won't be pushed around by gusts of wind from Wind Cannons or Gustmasters. Its effect makes it more situational than something like the First Mastery scroll. However, if you're in areas with strong winds, it'll come in handy. If you don't care about the Accessory, then you should at least defeat all the Lanmolas for the heart piece.
