  • The Zelda series has undergone significant changes, yet players remain fond of Ocarina of Time.
  • The demand for a full Ocarina of Time remake remains strong among fans.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time’s Nintendo 3DS remake has now been out for longer than the time between its original launch on the Nintendo 64 and its release on the 3DS. A player shared this fact with the gaming community, highlighting just how much time has passed since the initial release of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and sparking discussions about a potential remake.

The Legend of Zelda series has been around for quite a while, starting with its first entry, which was released in 1986 for the NES. Over the years, the Zelda franchise has undergone significant changes that, on one hand, have respected the original vision and “meaning” of the first Zelda game, but on the other, have completely revamped the concept. A major turning point for the series was the release of Ocarina of Time, a title that revolutionized not only the franchise itself but arguably the video game medium as a whole. The game is widely regarded as one of the best (if not the best) in the series and still holds the highest rating on Metacritic. It was released in 1998, and although many things have happened in the Zelda franchise since then, many might feel like 26 years haven’t passed.

Bizarre Zelda: Ocarina of Time Mod Adds Pikmin to the Game

A Zelda: Ocarina of Time modder brings Pikmin into the game, giving Link a small army that's surprisingly helpful in the game.

Taking to Reddit, user mrdrofficer pointed out a fact that might have made more than a few people feel ancient: more time has passed since Ocarina of Time's 3DS remake than between the game's original N64 release and its 3DS remake. For those who may not remember, Ocarina of Time 3D launched on Nintendo’s handheld console in June 2011—13 years after the game’s original release. Now, 14 years have passed since that day.

It's Been More Than 26 Years Since Ocarina of Time's Initial Release

Mrdrofficer’s post resonated with many players in the community, whose first reaction was to call for an Ocarina of Time remake. While many recognize the historical importance of the original game, the desire for a “full-on reimagining that fleshes out the world and puts it on the level of a modern AAA” remains strong among the fanbase. A couple of years ago, a fan-created Unreal Engine 5 recreation gave players a glimpse of what an official remake could look like.

With the recent announcement of Nintendo’s new console, many might be hopeful to see an Ocarina of Time remake for the Switch 2. As fans pointed out on mrdrofficer’s post, this feels like the perfect moment to bring back one of the most important titles in the franchise’s history. Only time will tell whether Nintendo will finally decide to take on the challenge of remaking Ocarina of Time.
