While playing The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, a couple of players designed an incredible pirate ship that can fly. The Tears of the Kingdom community often builds impressive machines in the game, but this one has stood out to many Zelda fans due to its complex design based on the legendary Flying Dutchman.
While it might be hard to believe, Tears of the Kingdom is already a couple of years old. The game served as a sequel to the incredibly popular The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. While the 2023 title featured a reworked version of Breath of the Wild's map, including Sky Islands and The Depths, one of its best differentiating features was Ultrahand. Using this new ability, Link had the power to connect objects to make contraptions that could be controlled using Zonai Devices. Since the game's release, players have utilized Ultrahand to create some stunning builds in Tears of the Kingdom.

The Flying Dutchman Pirate Ship Made in Tears of the Kingdom
One of these recent contraptions was shared by kmarkow on Reddit. Working in collaboration with CaptainPattPotato, they built The Flying Dutchman in Tears of the Kingdom, and the finished design was not disappointing. The pirate ship was massive, with its size dwarfing Link. The build included numerous sails and a small platform where the player could stand to control the ship. While the design of The Flying Dutchman was impressive, the ability to fly made it stand out. As seen in the Reddit video, the ship sailed among the Sky Islands, even at one point flying next to one of Tears of the Kingdom’s dragons.
When sharing the build, kmarkow provided some details about the project. According to the Reddit user, CaptainPattPotato played a pivotal part in getting the pirate ship to fly, claiming they were the “master of huge, flying Juney builds.” In addition, kmarkow thanked the Hyrule Engineering subreddit for their help with resized items. They included a list of the parts that were altered for the build, such as infinite wings, sails, and a Juney wagon.
This Flying Dutchman creation has caught the attention of the Hyrule Engineering subreddit. So far, the post has gained hundreds of upvotes and many positive comments. Interestingly, CaptainPattPotato revealed that the final product turned out much quieter than the prototype. According to the Reddit user, that initial build had the engine located at the back of the ship. Fortunately, kmarkow included QR codes for those who want to check out the build in Tears of the Kingdom by using the Zelda Notes app.
It is worth noting that this is only one of many machines that players have shared in Tears of the Kingdom. While players do not need to make elaborate machines like those on the Hyrule Engineering subreddit to progress through the game, these builds evidence the creativity of the community. Several years removed from the game’s launch, players have become more familiar with the building mechanics, even learning about glitches to make previously impossible contraptions plausible.
Thanks to the creative possibilities of Ultrahand, it seems Zelda fans will continue to play Tears of the Kingdom for many years to come. However, it is worth mentioning that potential details about the next big Zelda game for the Switch 2 were recently leaked. According to a supposedly inside source, the next installment could include “cross-dimensional” gameplay features. While this might be interesting to see in action, none of this has been confirmed by Nintendo, so fans should take the information with a grain of salt. In the meantime, they should look out for new machine designs made in Tears of the Kingdom by skilled builders.

This installment once again sees Link and Zelda battling to protect Hyrule from falling to Ganondorf. This new adventure takes place in the same land of Hyrule as Breath of the Wild but sees something called the Upheaval, which allows link to travel to Sky Islands, as well as deep into the Depths beneath Hyrule. Players can use special abilities to fuse together weapons, and build items to help them progress through the release.
